Here's a report for a recent stay 1/15-1/16

Location: The hotel is located on Sand Dunes drive, less than 100 feet from CA-1. You can see the hotel from the freeway. Down the street (CA-218) is a McDonalds, Starbucks, Chilis, Smart and Final and a few other similar places. The hotel itself is located right on the beach and of all the hotels I saw in Monterey, it has the best location (except for maybe the Intercontinental).

Hotel: This ranks as the nicest Best Western property I've been to. While the building is showing age from the outside (particularly on the beach side), effort has clearly gone into its upkeep. Landscaping is nice, the lobby is expansive and features gorgeous floor to ceiling windows. During the off season, there are fewer restaurants open at the hotel and the gift shop does not sell sodas/waters/snacks. Also, the restaurant is on the 4th floor and check-in on the 2nd which is a bit different.

Check-In: For the first time since my status match, my status counted at a BW property. We arrived at 11 AM and were told our room (King Bed, Partial Ocean View) was not ready. However, the agent saw that I was Diamond and upgraded us on the spot to a King Bed, Ocean Front balcony room and checked us in despite posted check-in time being 4 PM. She was very friendly and I was quite happy this hotel notices status ^

Room: The room was also the nicest I've had at a Best Western. There were two sets of shades (black out and day shades) controlled by electronic controls near the bed so you could view the ocean while you were in the room. Plus there was expensive track lighting, a 42 inch flat screen TV and a large shower with detachable shower head. The toiletries were even Gilcrest and Soames. The only drawback was the Guest Services guide listed the price of every item incase I stole it which feels tacky ($950 for the desk chair, really?)

Check-Out/Other: The hotel charges $10 for parking which is a pain and a $7.75 "Energy Surcharge", whatever that means. They did grant me a 1 PM check out too. Breakfast is not free and I did not sample the restaurant. Being able to be on the beach and the service at this hotel really impressed me. I am already planning on returning during the summer to see if it's as good during the high season.

My AAA rate was $119 and I will stay here again.

Summer will not be any better than it was this past week in Monterey. July and August have fog 2 out of 3 days. You will pay more for the room, there will be loads more people and the weather is unlikely to be any warmer than it was for your January stay.

The best part about summer is if you want hot weather in the upper 80s and 90s, then Carmel Valley is a ten mile drive from the Monterey beach.

Glad you enjoyed Monterey and caught the days between winter rain storms for your visit.

Well,

I agree this is certainly the top BW I have stayed at, other great BW's include the Napa, CA plus, and Calistoga inn, but tough to beat right on the beach=)
