Greetings all. Does anyone know or have experience of requesting bulkhead seats at check-in (in economy) and wether or not VS silver card holders need to pay the 50 GBP or 30 GBP (for 'extra legroom seats')? Any insight would be much appreciated. The flight in question is for VS900/901 to NRT next month on a 346.

I admit I thought silvers did have to pay. But I'm not 100% sure on that.

I think anyone has to pay, Golds and Uniqs too.

You can always ask them nicely first, my staff told me they often been told those seats all been located already.

So I guess the demand is quite high these days, even getting a paid bulkhead seat you really need to be there early. So the chance for a free one is slim.

BTW, I believe the bulkhead seats for the PE is easier to get, and they don't normally ask money for it - as long as you ask nicely :).

Virgin don't charge for bulkhead seats. They hold them back in case passengers with babies need them.

The charges for exit row seats have been in place for several years. The (fairly) new 'extra leg room' seats in Y are now available across the fleet.

I understand that people who have booked direct with VS have had some success in booking these over the phone with Virgin a few days before travel, but this is anecdotal rather than from personal experience.

Thanks for your replies. Indeed we would have needed to pay for the bulkhead seats. However, as no one had paid the extra on our flight to Tokyo and myself and my wife weren't seated together we were able to request seats (51 D/E) which were reserved for us straight away and able to move after take-off! Fantastic service from the predominantly Japanese crew onboard.
Upon leaving after the earthquake we were just happy to have a seat onboard and somehow that puts everything into perspective!
