Other than renting a car, is there a reasonable rail/bus option to/from Plainvile from the BDL airport?

Thanks!

If there is, you'll still wish you had rented the car. It will take many hours on several convoluted bus routes when a car from Plainville will take about a half hour. BDL is severaly lacking on public transportation options.

It's something like 20 miles, all highway. Renting a car or hiring a car service would get you there in a half hour or so.

Anything else will take hours and not be worth it.

I believe it is possible by several bus trips, but it would take several hours, and I believe only runs during the evening rush hour to Plainville.

Thank you both; care to recommed a car service in case it is snowing and the traveller has no experience with winter driving?

Our company uses Premier Limo. They are very good. I highly reccomend them.

Definately don't try to mess about with mass transit. It's not a viable option.

Plainville doesn't have a great restaurant scene, but West Hartford, just up the road (about 10 miles), has many great options. It's Exit 43 off I-84 (you'd take I-84 East out of Plainville).

Have you ever been to J. Timothy's? Probably the best wings I've had....enjoyed in an 18th century stagecoach stop. Great chowder too.

Actually, I'm impressed. It looks like the OP can take the Bradley Flyer to Union Station in Hfd. and then the Plainville/Bristol Express to Plainville.

I could be wrong, if you are referring to the one run by Dattco, it is only week day. www.dattco.com/scheduled-commuter-service/schedules/23_express.pdf

And that only gets you to one spot in Plainville. This area is very suburban. This is not 'city' living with stops everywhere, all the time.

Ah...got me on the weekday service. I was just impressed that the OP would have one transfer had they chose this route.

(Apart from public transit options...I know ALL about Plainville...I grew up in the area ;) )

Me too, two towns over (Wolcott). I was stunned there was even any option, even limited for public transportation.

It's no West Hartford Center. ;)

We're actually moving to Southington later this year and have been trying some of its local restaurants.

What are your findings? When I was a kid, we used to go to Mr. Steak on Queen St. (surprise) and that was kind of a treat. (You never answered my question about J. Timothy's.)

Actually, this post got me curious on the bus service in the area in case I want to catch it the next time I'm in the 589 so I started reading up on it. According to the CT Transit website: New Britain, Bristol, Wallingford and Meriden bus service operates on a "flag stop" basis. This means the bus will stop to pick up passengers at any safe location along the route when the customer waves or signals to the driver that they wish to ride. I'm sure the driver would probably stop to drop off a passenger along the route to accomodate them.

I am originally from Bristol. Always drove to work in Hartford when I lived there (now coming on 16 years in FL:D)

Restaurants in the area you say? Have you tried Uncle Sams, 538 Middle St at Redstone? Pizza place owned by a Greek family that have had a few places in the Bristol/Farmington area - Pizza House on Farmington Av and Uncle Sams (was Big 6 onion rings, now a 5 Guys (yuck).

I have not been north since they moved to the new location. Love to hear how the Kamis family is doing.
