Bonus Miles offer is only available on the first $80,000 in net annual Card purchases on your Card account (meaning all Card purchases by all cardholders, at any type of merchant); after that, net Card purchases at these merchants will earn Aeroplan Miles at the regular rate. The $80,000 limit will reset to zero after the day your December statement is printed. Terms, conditions and eligible merchant categories may change without notice.

There seem to be lots of these bonus mile offers with credit cards these days, it's getting tough to remember which card to use where!

I've started using the new Amex (Canadian) Gold Rewards card, it gives double points for _all_ travel expenses. Although with Fairmont, I've got to make sure to pay for at least 5 nights with my Amex Platinum card to ensure FPC Plat in case I don't hit 10 stays! And currently I'm getting 2.35 Aeroplan points/$ on my Amex Aerogold card due to a targeted bonus offer. It goes on and on.....

Cool.. I would be on Amex as well, just a high fee.. but I'm thinking about the extra stuff like free breakfast you would receive if you have an Amex Platinum card.. so considering getting one.

This is the wrong forum for the discussion, but I've found that usually the card "pays" for itself with the benefits I receive on one or two stays. I think I've posted some details in the past, but last year I stayed at both the Fairmont Kea Lani and the Sonoma Mission Inn (to bring it back to this forum) and the total of 7 days of breakfasts, a lunch for two, and a spa credit were worth more than the Amex Plat fee. It's also good for cities where there are _no_ Fairmonts!

I'm a money guy, and although the break evens seem really good, its taking the $399 annual fee hit and actually doing it. We were in the islands last year for 22 nights, and that would have meant $1,100 just in breakfasts at least in savings.. so duh, no brainer, just trigger shy.. maybe one of these 50,000 point bonuses for signing up AMEX Platinum will make pull the trigger sooner or later.

Not quite IMO, in order to get the free breakfast and other amenities you would have had to book through AMEX, i.e. book the BAR rate, the AMEX amenities can definitely not be combined with FAF rates and many other rates.

Also, most of the time the AMEX FHR amenities are identical with the Virtuoso amenities which anyone can book through a Virtuoso affiliated TA (again Virtuoso rates are identical or similar to BAR rates)

The Amex Plat card can still make sense for some people, but it´s not that easy to get the money back if one already takes advantages of various rates/promos.

Thanks for the clarification.. Jasper2009, do you have an American Express Plat card? I've heard of Amex Members being honored the breakfast and upgrade on rates they've found throughout the internet.. not quite sure about friends and family rate.

I personally don´t see the value of the Plat card for my travel pattern, especially the high foreign currency fees are a deal breaker for me as I travel abroad regularly.

I´m sure if you spend enough $$$$ each year, Amex FHR will try its best to negotiate the amenities for other publically available rates than the official rate, but I wouldn´t count on it.

There is an official Virtuoso/AMEX FHR/etc. rate which usually is identical/slightly cheaper than BAR which includes all the amenities, generally you have to book through them and they only have access to one rate that includes the amenities, occasionally the TA may be able to take over a reservation you made on the Fairmont website (but not third party bookings), but that´s not the official procedure and will generally require some negotiation. (IMO not necessarily worth the hassle)

Often the FHR rate is cheaper than the BAR rate, in my experience it happens a lot in Vegas for example. I've also got good rates at the Chateau Laurier through Amex. You do have to use their TA service to get the benefits and it doesn't (in my experience) do any good to flash the card at checkin if you're not on a FHR rate. Quite often I'll find the best rate I can online or through promos and then call Amex to see what they're quoting. If it's a similar price I'll book it, but usually it's not competitive. I probably only end up making 4 or 5 bookings a year through them, but it's been worthwhile so far.

Getting FPC Platinum after 5 nights has been nice a couple of years, although last year I qualified the old-fashioned way. I also prefer the food and calmness in the Amex lounges at YYZ over the MLLs. And Starwoods Gold isn't much, but at least it's something. On the whole, I've been pretty happy with the card.

Cool Vegas.. There is no Fairmont in Vegas is there? The lounges are another benefit, but really don't fly enough to take advantage of the lounge aspect of AMEX. Do FHR match rates?

Does the Amex platinum aerogold card make Aeroplan points as well as get one into maple leaf lounges and priority lounges?
If I get one will I not need a maple leaf card? Seems liKe that would save me 500$

All canadian cards are linked above. I would call American Express to ensure that what your features are you're looking for is fully understood. Good Luck.
