Good for Delta! Sorry you didn't get your upgrade, but the income for Delta is fantastic

There's only one date in the 14-day period from Jan. 8 where there are presently no Business cabin seats for sale on that non-stop ATL-AUA. If that's your travel date, regrets.

maybe they will switch it for a 757 last minute?

Sounds like DL revenue management left some money on the table for this flight. I'd bet our last-minute-shopper OP would have paid more than the people who booked before her.

If its really true that pax willingness to pay increases as the flight date approaches, I don't understand why an airline would choose to consistently sell out.

Uh, I think what OP wants is a complimentary upgrade.;)

Unless they have an MX change I wouldnt bet on it. Y doesnt look that full any day for the next couple of weeks so I cant see them upgrading the metal to add more seats

Oops...Let me rephrase my last post...

Sounds like DL revenue management left some money on the table for this flight. I'd bet our BIYS(DM,PM,..) OP (and others alike) would have been more loyal to delta in the future had the upgrade been cleared than the people who booked before.

If its really true that pax willingness to be loyal to an airline decreases as upgrades disappear, I don't understand why an airline would choose to consistently sell out BE.

I'm only half kidding.

I have no problem if DL sells F/BE tickets and I think most people here have no problem with that. How many times have people written "If you want a guaranteed seat up front, buy a ticket." I may be disappointed if I don't get an upgrade but I am not unhappy if FC is sold out or the upgrades went to people higher on the totem pole than me. Them's the rules. When I was a Gold I didn't complain of Plat's getting upgrade -- made me want to be Plat.

I'm assuming this is in reference to the thread on monetizing FC -- the issue there is the possibility of cut-price (i.e. significantly less than fare differential) upgrades being offered to people ahead of medallion upgrades. Apples and oranges.

Can you split a PNR after the first segment(s) are flown?

I apologize for hijacking the thread, but I have to respectfully disagree. We don't value the medallion upgrade benefit for garanteed upgrades, rather for some probability of getting an upgrade. The value diminishes if fewer seats are available upfront. It makes no difference per se, whether delta lowers F ticket prices 10%, offers buy ups, or gives non rev upgrades.

Yes, I was referring to the buy up program, but our upgrade benefits could be equally affected if they announced a systemwide drop in F fares.

Why is this a thread? Do we need a thread every time Delta sells a FC cabin out and someone misses an upgrade?

Yes. I've done it coming back from CDG so I could get an upgrade MSP-CMH and give it to my wife.

AUA isn't exactly a big business destination. I wonder if many (most?/all?) of those "bought" F seats were with award miles...

Possible... Also possible is that Delta Vacations was running a promotion offering free upgrades on flights for certain fare classes when purchasing a flight/hotel/rental car package. Seen this a few times. That would fill up F in a hurry.
