US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Teen Tries to Set Fire to Shoe on Plane
Teen Tries to Set Fire to Shoe on Plane
PITTSBURGH: August 4, 2002 — A 17-year-old passenger on a US Airways flight from Toronto was arrested Saturday for using a lighter on his shoe, authorities said.
The Canadian teen of Iranian decent told police he was burning loose material off his tennis shoes as the plane was taxiing into Pittsburgh International Airport.

Thanks to JayBrian for finding me the link in FT Chat!
I like this part:
Police said the boy and his father were connecting in Pittsburgh on a flight to California, but US Airways asked them to make other travel arrangements.
Think another carrier will take them?

Did any passengers on the plane see him doing this? If I saw someone lighting their shoe on fire I think I might do something about it.
They mention in the article about joking not being allowed. If this kids was only joking, then he has a very sick sense of humor.

I have used a lighter to more easily break a thread from a jacket or shirt. (Not on a plane of course, but I'm not a teen either) Wonder if everyone's getting their knickers in a twist over seemingly harmless act?

There are certain types of frayed shoelaces that I've used a match or lighter on to make the plastic melt so it will go through the eyelets on the shoes again. But I wouldn't do it on an airplane.
