For a very traditional carnivore city.... the recent explosion of Japanese Fusion and Peruvian Cevicherias in Buenos Aires is noteworthy. I think its a good idea for us to start a separate thread on where to eat Japanese Fusion and Peruvian fare in EZE....

Here is a list of a few of my current (as of Jan 2011) favorites....

- M Buenos Aires
- Sipan
- Astrid & Gaston
- Ohno Obsoleto Bistro

Following the recommendation of a friend from Lima, I have visited Status near Congreso several times - the cerviche never disappoints. For those looking for a cheaper alternative to the options listed by Gaucho above, this is the place to head for.

Well I hadn't a clue what cerviche was till I Googled it. Not so sure I would like it.

I greatly enjoyed Osaka (I know it's technically a chain with SCL and LIM locations). This was my first (and to date only) fusion experience, so I can't provide a benchmark. Nevertheless, I found it had a creative menu, utilizing a few local ingredients in addition to Peruvian and Japanese staples. I did feel that it was a very trendy place, which I tend not to favor. We didn't actually start eating until midnight so I was falling asleep in my food! I also suspect this trendiness was reflected in the prices (by far our most expensive meal in the city). However, for locals there was a photo op with a very tall bearded gentleman (basketball star I presume) so trendy isn't all bad. Of course, the food is phenomenal! (disclaimer: sushi and ceviche are my favorite foods) :D

I will have you over for ceviche, but not in my Argentina home, as I would not trust the fish. I frequently make ceviche at the non-Argentina home, with fish I trust to eat in its ¨cocido en limon¨ state. And I say this honestly and sincerely, as I drink airport lounge vino tinto of a quality far far better than the inside of any EZE salon VIP has ever seen.

To be honest...the thought of just how fresh the fish used would be in BA did cross my mind. I'm sure it must be okay or we would have heard some negative stories about fusion cuisine in BA.

I have no doubt that the better restaurants can source items that Joe Blow Provinica is not able to. I also have no doubt that a better chef is not going to allow ptomaine to be served.

As Hiddy correctly states, if you buy your fresh fish at the sources listed by us all in the Fresh Fish thread Hiddy started a few weeks ago, you will be fine... ^

Of Course, just ask for it. I regularly do this at Jumbo when buying Hake or Abadejo to make the Gaucho version of Fried Fish Sticks... :D ^

I'm definitely a fan of Osaka and going to check out Paru this Wednesday, so I'll report back on how it is.

I also really like the ceviche and food at Peru Deli. There's some 2-for-1 lunch specials on BuenosAiresDelivery.com as well - http://www.buenosairesdelivery.com/en/restaurant/peru_deli_peruvian_cuisine/

I've also been ordering the ceviche from SushiPhone, and both it and the sushi are pretty good by Buenos Aires standards.

I had noticed it but kept quiet as I thought it might be some new funky way of spelling it. :D

Oh good....bit of a cheek to call it the Gaucho version is it not? If anything it should be the HIDDY version. :p

Probably easier to cook several little fillets at a time rather than the whole thing. Makes for a nice addition to a picada as well.

Yes, you are right, I stand corrected... :o

Perhaps I will call it the Original Hiddy Recipe (improved by Gaucho)... :p :D ^

We tried Sipan for lunch the other day, and while the ceviche was excellent, the service was a bit indifferent, and the atmosphere surprisingly noisy. Perhaps because it was lunchtime? Considering the high prices, I was expecting better.

I went to Sipan for dinner this week and was very, very disappointed. I did not find anything to really stand out and thought it was way over-priced. The sushi was pretty miserable too.

I also went to Paru last week, and luckily that was a hundred times better. Everything there was amazing - ceviche, tiradito, sushi and lamb chops. I'd highly recommend them.

The place is indeed noisy and the ambiance is also not too good... their location is just not very trendy. All this will change soon as their new flagship location will be in Palermo, I have high expectations for their upcoming grand opening.

Wow... I consider myself a pain in the rear with Asian fare and Ive never had an experience like you describe.... would you care to elaborate? Ive never had the 'straight' sushi dishes as I always go with their traditional dishes. Again, I would love to know details of what you saw as their shortcomings.

Also, if you could please post details of this Park place that you mention, I would like to go there soon and try them out. Thanks.

I know they just opened their Palermo branch, but I have not been yet.

Also, the other restaurant I mentioned was "Paru" not "Park." Sorry about that... Great food.

I also had my best meal ever in Buenos Aires on Saturday night at a new puerta cerrada, Casa Mun. Amazing sushi, dim sum and BBQ pork. http://www.casamun.com

July, 2006 Wine Spectator rated 91 pts with review: Lots of bold raspberry, black currant and boysenberry fruit, along with hints of mineral, game, espresso and mocha. Long finish pumps out fruit, but vibrant minerality too, with an intriguing ferrous hint.

I disagree regarding the ferrous hint. I thought it more ferric like!
