My memory is off a little now and I really can't recall what happened when I've encountered these situations in the past, so it's up to my good buddies at FT to refresh my memory!

How many upgrade coupons are turned in under the following situations.

1. Flying TPA-CLT-LAX; CLT-LAX cleared in advance and I'm put on the TPA-CLT standby list at checkin
At check-in in TPA, I give the agent three coupons (DMUP01). When I clear TPA-CLT at the gate, I need not turn in any more coupons.

2. Flying TPA-CLT-LAX; TPA-CLT cleared in advance and I'm put on the CLT-LAX standby list at check-in in TPA
At check-in in Tampa, I give the agent one coupon. When I clear CLT-LAX at the Charlotte Airport gate, I only have to turn in two coupons.

3. Flying LAX-CLT-TPA; CLT-TPA cleared in advance and I'm put on the LAX-CLT standby list at check-in
At check-in at LAX, I give the agent one upgrade coupon. When I clear the LAX-CLT upgrade at the gate, I only need to give the agent two coupons.

4. Flying LAX-CLT-TPA; LAX-CLT cleared in advance and I'm put on the CLT-TPA standby list at check-in at LAX
At check-in at LAX, I give the agent three coupons. When I clear CLT-TPA at the Charlotte Airport gate, I don't need to give the agent any more certificates.

Am I wrong about how upgrades are handled in these four situations?

Thanks.

They have done a pretty good job r.e. #2 but I'm not sure the OFFICIAL rules have changed:

You used to have to give certs for the initial cleared flight and then IF you cleared at the connecting gate for the next flight, you owed them the number of certs needed for the second flight (regardless of how many you gave them earlier). I flew MIA-PIT-SFO one time a few years ago and cleared MIA-PIT at the Gold window, and was WL for the PIT-SFO. At check-in I still had not cleared the WL. In MIA I surrendered two certs for the 1,000 or so miles from MIA-PIT and then when I got to the SFO flight, I'd cleared for the connection. I handed the agent one more cert and they (correctly, according to the rules at that time...) requested three for the PIT-SFO distance. Now they seem to be better at attaching the 'connection stub' from the 800 mile certs and allowing them to count once the connection clears. Official or not, that seems to be the new m.o.

OK geo, you did say "a couple of years ago"! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

On a recent trip, Only PIT-BDL cleared on a SEA-PIT-BDL trip. I surrendured 1 NAU at checkin for the PIT-BDL segment and was waitlisted for the 1st segment. I asked the agent and he said that I would just just need to fork over 2 more NAUs at the gate if SEA-PIT cleared.

Coming home, my PIT-SEA cleared but BDL-PIT didn't. I forfeited 3 NAUs at checkin and was waitlisted for BDL-PIT. I asked there as well and she said that "the most DM01s that anyone has to for over for one person/ one trip is three." I like that! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

UA on the other hand would pull their certs individually. If I was flying, say SEA-DEN-LAS, and the upgrade cleared in it's entirety in advance I would give up 2 500 milers for the entire trip. HOWEVER, if only SEA-DEN cleared I'd have to give up 2 (maybe 3) for that segment up front and then another two at the gate when DEN-LAS cleared. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

If I only clear the first leg of the trip, I always let the agent know I'm on standby on the second leg, and make sure I get the connection stubs. As long as they fill them out, they can only be used for that one ticket (ticket number gets filled out on them).
