I have more than a million US miles in my account. Before US goes belly-up (Please! Let's not make this a discussion of whether that will happen or not!), is there any way I can protect those miles by transferring them to another account? I know Hilton does this with some airlines, but US is not partnered with them on that.

Any ideas?

Thanks

This isn't the answer you're looking for, but my favorite way of ensuring that my miles don't get lost is to use them! Start burning the miles! Burn 180k for an F ticket to JNB on SWISS. 135k to Australia. Now if miles actually collected interest, holding on to them may be worthwhile...

It's actually 240k to JNB in First on Swiss... I know 'cause 2x240 hit my account a couple months ago. OMNIA, if you fly to & from JNB around Thanksgiving, you can share dinner in the first-class pod seat with me and/or my partner!

I agree. Use up the miles. We're going to Hawaii on Northwest in August (my traitor Northwest-flyer boyfriend) and Johannesburg on Swiss in November.

Right. Not the answer I wanted. I can't burn them right now. No time. So please let's not pursue that.

So I return to my original questions: how do I protect them?

Thanks.

I have nothing bad to say about Randy Petersen. His Privilege Flyer is a real service. However, that program does have limits (see fine print for the dollar amount). In short, if an airline goes under many people lose, including the ff members.

I gave away a few trips to relatives. It's not as painful after the first one.

FWIW this was in my email statement today:

DIVIDEND MILES UPDATE.

We have received questions about the impact on Dividend Miles in the event
that US Airways files for bankruptcy protection. Please be assured that US
Airways plans to operate the Dividend Miles Program as we do today. Miles
already earned and future miles earned still would be available for award
redemption. We will continue to keep you abreast of our plans, and invite you
to visit http://www.usairways.com/about/press/index.htm for the most
up-to-date information.
