I recenlty booked DCA-PHL-MAN roundtrip and asked to use miles for the upgrade to Envoy. I have had the return trip clear already, but the out bound I am still waitlisted. I asked to use USE20 awards and the 40K points have come out of my account. Do you recieve award certificates or are the certificates attached to the tickect electronicly?
They are electronic. If you don't clear, you have to call back and get the miles reinstated

Well as with most things at US, they're not completely electronic. When you check in, they will write out upgrade certificates for you (this takes about 5 minutes). They'll also typically print out the section of your PNR and highlight the part that shows upgrade confirmation with mile deduction. This is another one of those internal audit things.
Also - while you should keep your eyes on your account if you don't get upgraded - I have had miles automatically recredited into my account when I didn't get upgraded.

Get there early.. I had trouble when I flew to Munich in April. I called in advance to get an upgrading using miles and the CSR explained how everything worked. When I got to CLT I was 2 hours early and spent most of the time trying to get upgraded to envoy. In both cases (flight to and from) the desk agent didn't have a clue I was upgrading and when they found out, they had to call to get a certificate number. It was such a headache, but I did get upgraded and it was well worth it in the long run.
