Anyone have recommendations for dinner?

Not sure where you're staying but if you are near the Opera House, just across from it and next to the Caravelle Hotel are a couple decent restaurants, most notably a German style place with a micro brewery and pretty good food. Actually the restaurant in the Sheraton is good as well (just around the corner from the Caravelle).

We'll be down on the river in Dong Khoi so I'll look into that. The main problem is we're arriving in the afternoon of the 31st.

I was there last NY and it was great to be with the crowds and watch all the traffic lock up.

If you do intend to join the throng (or think you might get caught up in it) do leave valuables at home. I know you are no stranger to Vietnam, but a mate of mine got caught out despite living in Saigon for 10 years. There is some aggressive pickpocketing and the crowds can be so dense that physically it's difficult to stop.

I had a great time. I particularly liked the Jean Michel Jarre music and laser display they had going at one point.

I usually try to be in Saigon for the NY and hope to make it again this time.
