Next year, after 2 unsuccessful tries, I think I'll finally get to take the train from Lima up the Andes (a schedule has actually been posted). Then I want to go by land (bus, train) via Huancavelica, Puno, La Paz and Tucuman to Buenos Aires. The Bolivian and Argentine trains don't run very often, but there is a scheduled train arrival at the border from La Paz/Oruro at 7:00 a.m. and a train departure the same day from Tucuman at 4 p.m. for Bs. As. I read that the normal travel time by bus between these points is 10 hours, so I'll probably wind up taking the plane from either Salta or Tucuman, but I can still hope, can't I? Does any of the experts here have suggestions on how I can go by train, other than waiting a few days for the next one (either in Bolivia or Argentina)? Is the 10-hour bus trip realistic? How much would a private car cost?

I dont know the specifics, but I will speculate that a private car will be prohibitive.

Have you checked out the Trip Advisor Forums... Im guessing that the regulars over there may be able to give you some great advice. I know a private guide that is an expert in all things related to the North of Argentina, PM me and I will put you in contact with her.

Cheers,
