I am flying from PIT - STT the last week in May. I have purchased a ticket for myself and used 30,000 miles for a companion to travel with me. I have all these Upgrade Coupons which I need to use. I know I can use them since my ticket is not an "Awards" ticket, however is there anyway that I can use them for my companion who is using an "Awards" ticket. I have been Gold for the past two years, will this help me?

I really think the answer is no to this question, but it kills me, I am travelling with two companions on awards ticket and mine is paid, and I am pretty sure there isn't a way to use my coupons.
Definitely not in advance. If there are seats after all the DM's have cleared at the gate, you could try to beg. That will get you a scornful look and a sinister laugh, at best.

The only thing which might work would be for you to smuggle a pistol into the gate area, mimic Clevon Little in Blazing Saddles by taking youself hostage with the pistol, and walk backwards towards the first available F class seat.
It might work.

There was a time that award tickets (North American) could be upgraded with purchased 800 mile certificates on the day of departure. That is no longer the case.
So the official answer is there is no way to upgrade an award ticket.

Often my companion, also a Chairmans preferred, flies on award tickets when I fly on paid tickets... never ever ever ever ever been successful in doing this. Also tried at the gate once when First Class was almost empty. No luck. They filled the FC cabin instead with US Airways employees... and let the remaining FC seats travel empty.

I thought as much, it doesn't make much sense to me, but thanks!

I still have a certifiacte from doing this over 12 years ago. You could upgrade 2hrs in advance. If they want to increase revenue they should bring this back.
