In the CLT boarding lounge Fri evening I overheard the agents talking about the replacing of the 767's on this route with 330's begining in July http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Sorry mauld ( http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif) this is slightly old (well, for FT) news. If you look at US' timetable (online version), looks like the 330s are back on the CLT-LGW route on May 4.

And, from a recent press release from US Airways:

ARLINGTON, Va., March 15, 2002 -- US Airways will restore most of its transatlantic operations over the next three months with the return of flights between the U.S. and Europe that were suspended temporarily following the reduction in traffic after September 11.

Roundtrip transatlantic flights will increase from the current 61 weekly to 98 weekly with the return of daily frequencies serving US Airways' key destinations in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and The Netherlands from its international gateways of Charlotte, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.

For the summer schedule, US Airways also will reintroduce its larger state-of-the-art Airbus A330-300 aircraft on many routes, supplementing U.S.-Europe operations using Boeing 767-200 aircraft.

....

On May 4, daily nonstop flights will return between Charlotte and Frankfurt (suspended in October 2001), using Boeing 767 aircraft. Also on May 4, daily nonstop Charlotte-London Gatwick capacity will expand from Boeing 767 to A330-300 operations.

This will probably co-inside with the lowered demand to SJU. I'm not sure when it happens, but the 330 comes off the PHL-SJU route at some point in the coming month or two.

Now if we could only get the 330 into AMS, I'd be happy.

The loads on this route don't seem to justify it though.

Nope. Never really have. I get the feeling that half the reason why US even flies this route is so that they can haul around load lots of tulips in the cargo hold.

Drat! I'm going to London (first time) on May 3 on one of the 767's. To make matters worse I'm sitting here watch my chances of using miles to upgrade to Envoy go from slim to none. When I bought the tickets two weeks ago there were 15 on the departing and 22 seats on the return. Latest tally: 6 and 15 respectively. sob...boo hoo.

Dingo, if you're using miles for the upgrade, can't you just do it now?

Yes, I thought miles were anytime in advance even on Int'l?

Of course, Anytime in advance, subject to capacity.

But with 24 seats up front, those trips should have been available both ways using miles..

That's what I thought as well, but admit that I'm not the best w/ awards. Is there an award code I can request for this? They effectively wait listed me...nuked my account for 80k (2 x 2 x 20k) and told me it may clear sometime between time of booking and departure.

I'd greatly appreciate any and all thoughts on getting this upgrade.

dingo - do you have elite status? I dont think that matters in this case, but maybe something is getting screwed up.

I would call in again and ask whats up.

Dingo -- the award code is USE2 (USE1 would be the 10K mile version for full-fare tickets)

I just called again and still no way to confirm me...drat again.

dingo

well, of course, now there arent enough seats available for anyone to confirm in advanced based on the numbers you indicated.

Was told that there weren't any when I made the reservation either...so not really a question of 'now', but also then.
