Does anyone know if it's possible to obtain a visa for Syria in Beirut, and if so, how long it takes to get one? Australians still apparently require one, and I see there is a possibility for a day trip to Damascus from Beirut. I'd like to be able to decide at the time whether I will/can do it or not, so it would be ideal if I could obtain the visa in Beirut rather than in Australia.

I don't think so. Syria generally requires one to get a visa in one's country of residence. You could try sweet-talking them in the consulate (and please let us know what happens if you do), but I would not expect success.

mecabq is correct but there are ways around that (somewhat costly and time consuming). Also, the embassy here in Beirut is very much a "token" embassy so I suggest you get your visa in Australia.

The visa isn't exactly cheap, so I was hoping I might be able to get it on the spot if I decide to go. Thanks for the advice though :)

You can sometimes get it at the border but it will cost you more and you have to pay in USD's.
