View Full Version : Can you upgrade a voucher?

I was returning home yesterday (ATL-CLT-BOS), and at CLT they were looking for volunteers. Levae 30 minutes later and fly CLT-DCA-BOS. In exchange I received a free ticket to be used in the continental us within 1 year.

When I use the voucher, what inventory do they pull it from? Can I use NAUs, do I have to use SWUs or are they not upgradeable at all?

If anyone sees a thread discussing, please let me know, I couldn't find one.

These are booked in /Z/ class and are not upgradeable by any means, for any status.

You should also be aware there are other threads which state that *some* agents will give you a $200 voucher in lieu of the free RT voucher. By using that towards a trip and paying the small difference in cash, the trip is now 1) upgradeable and 2) awards dividend miles. I have never done this but intend to ask in the future when bumped voluntarily. What I have done in the past is foist my Z class vouchers off on the wife and kids and fly on a revenue ticket so I get the miles.

Also, even though both award travel and voucher travel are pulled from Z inventory, the reservation can be held for 30 days before ticketing on a voucher but only 7 days for award travel. Otherwise it is the same which means if there are no award seats there are no voucher seats, again a possible advantage to the "$200 off a $249 fare" scenario.

I asked for a $200 voucher in December when I was bumped voluntarily off of a flight. The PIT agent seemed confused at my request and told me that only the shuttle and express flights give dollar vouchers.

US res agents seem to be incredibly restrictive on those "Round Trip Flight Credits". I requested an extra connection to do some business at the US Club in DCA and CLE and tried 5 times until an agent finally put me on the flights, agreeing that it was on the legal routing from SFO-LGA. I've gotten them to plan out the flights, only to default and say abrubptly- "Oh, you're on a RTFC" or "I bet you're on a RTFC right??!"

Oh well...free travel is free travel. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
