Starwood Preferred Guest - Same Day Award Redemption?

I have a flight into LAX that would potentially allow me to make a connection, but not 100%. If not, I'd be spending the night at the airport Westin until the next morning.
Is it possible to redeem a cash & points award at the hotel (assuming room availability), on the day of arrival? Or must it be done beforehand?
Thanks!

Hotels don't do room night redemptions - one must call SPG. Call from the lobby if you wish.

Exactly. I've had the hotel let me use their phone to call for this sometimes.

I have to disagree. While what other members say makes me think it is always safer to call or book online, I have certainly been able to book with points "on the spot" at the front desk.
Two hotels that have allowed me to do this that I remember are the Westin Kyoto and the Meridien New Delhi. I have never tried to do this without prior reservation in North America, so YMMV.
But I just wanted to throw that out there as a data point.

As an FYI and matter of policy, hotels are expressly forbidden by SPG to do this, so YMMV indeed.

Not that I'm by any means an expert on the internal goings on behind front desks, but on the rare occasions when I have redeemed points at front desks, my impression has always been that they simply called SPG on my behalf, as opposed to making the reservations themselves.
