California - San Diego in Mid January. thoughts?

Looking for a quick getaway with our kids. How is San Diego Mid January?

One thought: Check the San Diego Convention Center calendar for dates when larger meetings are in town (this is especially important if you are thinking of staying in the Downtown/Gaslamp area):

January has some meeting dates to watch out for: Librarians and critical care docs in the first half, and military technologists and thoracic surgeons at the end of the month.

If you are asking about the weather, it is better than most places:D However, it has been a cool year.

I live less than 20 miles east of downtown and we've already had several frosts this year. The city doesn't get the extremes that we get...20 miles isn't a big distance, but it can make a HUGE difference in the temps out here.

Pay attention to the weather forecast and pack accordingly.

Edit: I just noticed your location. Bring shorts and sandals. It's practically balmy compared to Edmonton. Even out here in the east county. LOL!

Probably will be very nice by Canadian standards.

Could be rainy, but most likely only on and off. Along the coast not likely to be less than 68-72 F during the day.

We are regular California Visitors (Family in the Valley and Malibu), but it's always a road trip down in our SUV down the Coastal Highway in Mid Summer.

Need a winter break with the wee little ones and Air Canada is having decent fares to San Diego from Edmonton.

If you are not using points, take a look at Humpreys Half Moon Inn on Shelter Island. We've stayed there several times with the kids and it was great and convenient to most places. They used to be in the Entertainment Book and we got some excellent discounts.

I was going to suggest this as well. My wife and I go there for a romantic getaway a couple of times a year. We also like the restaurant. Right on the water (Marina), very convenient to the airport and only 10 minutes or so from downtown.

Agree with your assessment of San Diego. BTW, very few people I know who live here use the term "Cali". A little like "Frisco".

I see you're from Santa Cruz? Last summer (2009) we drove from Edmonton to LA down the coastal highway and stayed 1 night in Santa Cruz. Cool place!

I checked the Entertainment book and Humphrey's Half Moon Inn is still there. Glad you liked Santa Cruz - it certainly has its idiosyncracies.
