i sent an email inquiry to US Airways about this, and they replied that they are advising passengers to keep their personal items (purse, briefcase, laptop case, diaper bag, camera bag, or backpack) within the dimensions of 18x12x4.

what have people's experience been as far as carry-on bags and personal items go?

my next flight should be a Shuttle flight. think they are treating Shuttle passengers any differently than other flights as far as carry-on bags?

My "personal item" is my laptop bag which is more like 12x14x8 I would say, no problem though through ten US flights already.

I think that your "personal" item should have to be small enough to stow under the seat in front of you ... but that's just my thought ...

Beckles is right on the sensible definition of a personal item. Reality depends on the security and or gate agent you run into and what they will allow through. Anything that will easily fit under the seat (or in your lap) should be considered a personal item.
