What is the closest hotel to dulles airport. I need to be at Dulles at 5 am, and want to stay at the closest hotel, or at least very close.

Any suggestions

Jtack,

Welcome to Flyertalk!

There are a bunch of hotels that are close to IAD. Two examples: The Hilton Washington Dulles Airport Hotel and Homewood Suites by Hilton @ Dulles International Airport are both in Herndon, VA, which is 1.93 miles from IAD.

The Marriott Hotel is the closest, I believe.

The Washington Dulles Marriott is very close (you can see the terminal from the hotel) and they offer a free shuttle service. Also has a nice restaurant and a bar that sells food on-site.

The Washington Dulles Airport Marriott starts their shuttle at 4:30 or 4:45 am (I don't recall the exact time). There are a lot of flight crews that stay at this property, and it would take about 4-5 minutes to reach the airport from the hotel.

I believe there is a coffee shop in the hotel that opens up at 4 am for all the early airport travelers.

The Dulles Airport Marriott is on the Airport property and probably 5-8 minutes closer than the other hotels. It is an older hotel dating back to around 1970. My recollection is that the Hyatt and Westin are next closest. MAP (http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&q=hotels&ie=UTF8&sll=38.957006,-77.430611&sspn=0.033038,0.054932&rq=1&ev=zi&radius=1.77&split=1&hq=hotels&hnear=&ll=38.957006,-77.430611&spn=0.033038,0.054932&z=14)

There is a trade-off between staying in an older low-rise hotel on the airport property, and a more modern hotel a little further away.

Agreed (which is why I prefer the Marriott Worldgate in Herndon over the IAD property) but some of the other hotels don't have early shuttle service so the OP might have to catch a cab if they went elsewhere.

There are also some cheaper properties (think Fairfield Inn or Quality Inn, compared to Westin or Hyatt) about three miles north of the airport around the intersection of 28 and 606.

I have stayed at the Dulles Airport Marriott numerous times, and it is very convenient espicially for early departures like the OP's. It is a bit old, but the staff is friendly, and I have never had any problems.

Comment on the "bit old". The hotel was originally built about 40 years ago. Additional wings were added perhaps 20+ years ago. BUT, the entire hotel was completely re-built about 3 years ago - i.e. entire wings were sealed off, then everything was gutted and re-built. So the guest rooms, and all the public spaces are essentially new.

It's not flashy, but they have a great staff and GM. And the location can't be beat. Their shuttle runs every 15 minutes, and takes about 5 minutes to the main terminal building. I've actually walked between the hotel and the terminal in about 15 minutes.

Marriott is the closest but it is also one of the most expensive in the area I've looked into.

Just an update for anyone wanting to stay at the Dulles Airport Marriott. I was just there last week, and they are currently rebuilding the Lounge & Restaurant. Thus, the only eating option was a temporary lounge in the one of the meeting rooms. Just something to keep in mind for picking a hotel near the airport.
