How long can US go without joining an Alliance. Travelers want one stop shopping and the ability to earn mega ff miles on Pacific routes.

Maybe I'm a heretic but I'm far more interested in upgrades than I am earning miles.

IMHO US needs to build out a West Coast presence a lot more than they need an alliance.

First, who doesn't like upgrades? http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif

But, US needs BOTH a global alliance AND west coast feed.

The vast majority of the business traffic that crosses the Atlantic comes from east of the Mississippi River. This is US's backyard. And the low-cost carriers don't offer international services or alliances so that's one more added benefit to US. Clearly it will take something more than 9 new A-330's and a few old 767's to truly capture this market. Hence the alliance. Tack on some legitimate west coast feed to the US AND alliance partner hubs and you have a much more viable option for the US flyer - not just those who want to collect US miles but more importantly for those who need to get somewhere globally in a seamless way. When it's time to go trans-Pacific, even though US might not offer the lift, the alliance partners will cover it. The alliance means that the dedicated US flyer who needs to get somewhere outside of US's route system will now have options that they can use efficiently AND will benefit them directly (in the form of miles, or upgrades or lounge access, etc.).
