Los Angeles - What were the 6 large adjacent circles I saw coming into LAX at night (near water?)

I have been flying for 25 years in and out of LAX, with many flights landing at night.

The other night, I was on a CO flight (1795) and about 20 minutes or so from landing I noticed that we appeared to be coming in from a different location than normal

I can normally tell when we are near Palm Springs, and Big Bear. This was completely different.

It looked like we were flying parallel to a river of some sort (a big one!) and I noticed a structure on the ground that was very strange - there were 6 large adjacent circles, 3 on one side, 3 on the other - all brightly lit up. They appeared to be on a small hill

I asked the person next to me if they knew what they were, and they had no idea, and was also a person who flies quite a bit.

Any idea of what the body of water might have been, and what the structure was???

large circles in that configuration suggests oil tanks. hmt tank services in compton, perhaps? not too far from the LA river.
