US Airways will be flying their very last DC-9 flight on Aug. 18th from PHL to PIT. US 433 departs at 8:00pm and arrives at 9:26pm. I'll be on this flight. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif

Is anyone else going to be on this flight?

Just booked a seat this noon, though I'm not sure if I can make it. I've got till tomorrow to sort out my schedule.

Scheduling resolved -- I arrive PHL from FLL at 4:45 pm and leave PIT the next morning at 905.

For those of us who are going to be on that flight, and even those who are not, why don't we figure out a time and meet in the Club beforehand? Say 6:30 or so?

us2: Sounds like a good idea! My friend and I will be at the Club around 7pm.

Count me out...I avoid their MD80's and DC9's like the plague. I'm glad to hear that the last DC9 is going out of service. Those planes are so old, they are growing wiskers. Now, lets hope they focus on the MD80's and get rid of those nasty things.

Anyone heard of any special retirement ceremony, etc. going on? When Delta retired its last L-1011 a few weeks ago, sounded like they had lots of cool stuff planned.

I agree that it's time for them to be retired -- the MD-80s are also going soon. For a lot of us, there's a sentimental attachment in any case -- my first flight in a jet was in a DC-9-30 and I've spent a lot of time in them over the succeeding 31 years. They were good airplanes in their day and I see no inconsistency in agreeing that their day is past while at the same time wanting to take one last ride for old time's sake.

What's so nasty about the MD-80s? I actually like the 2x3 seating if I get stuck in Y class. Plus, I know they're ex PSA birds. Long live PSA!!!

BTW, I guess you don't fly AA that often.

No, it is rare I fly AA. I only fly US, and only when forced by my mgmt, do I fly anyone else. The DC's and MD's are old old old nasty planes. Been in way too many that looked like they need more than just a cosmetic repair job.

I was on N25VJ about 3 weeks ago. The captain told me it was the old bird's second last flight. If anyone is interested, e-mail me and I'll be glad to send you a DTW tail photo.

Of the very old planes, I like the DC-9. Among the slightly old planes, the MD-80 isn't bad. It seems quieter.

The last DC-9 flight is not as much a big deal as Delta's L1011. Delta was the last major carrier to fly it, unless one considers the Air Atlanta (Iceland) or ATA a major carrier. One can still fly on a DC-9-30 on TWA and Northwest.

Although I can't be on the final DC-9 flight I will be on one of the last flights--SYR-PHL tomorrow (Thursday) afternoon. I am glad I get the chance for one last ride on this veteran airplane.

This is just a reminder that I will be in the PHL US Airways Club around 6:30/7:00pm tomorrow evening prior to boarding for the flight.

Are you still planning on showing up, us2 ?

Anyone else going to be there as well?

I will be there. Was told by an F/A this afternoon that they are planning something for the last flight at both PHL and PIT.

Send me a private e-mail and I'll give you the info you need to have me paged at the Club. The B/C one.

They are planning a water cannon at PHL and a celebration at the gate in PIT.

I flew a DC-9 from PIT-BNA on Sat. afternoon... last day of service. Great flight. On Sunday, when going back through PIT, there were about 5 DC-9's lines up over by the hangars.... ready to roll on to the desert I suppose.
