Hey guys! I'm doing a DL Mileage Run, like dozens of other FTers and decided to stay the night in San Francisco, but haven't picked out a hotel yet!

I'm considering the Hotel Whitcomb, but based on the BART maps, I am hacing trouble judging if that is reasonable route. I'm thinking about taking it from SFO right to the hotel, and then just hanging out in that general area for the day.

Does that seem reasonable? If you have a better suggestion, by all means :) I'm just trying not to use too many miles for the hotel A nice meal that evening for a solo diner would be great, but I am still looking previous posts for that!

Thanks guys!

Hotel couldn't be more convenient to BART. The 'hood is sketchy, but you aren't far from good things. If you are unfamiliar with the area and stick to walking on Market St. until you get to a more savory location, you will be fine. Or just hop back underground on BART and/or MUNI. The station is right out the door.

Since it's sketchy, do you have any other alternatives per chance? :)

I was also considering The Hyatt Regency (at 5 Embarcadero Center) It's about 17k miles as opposed to 9k but from what I am further reading, the Whitcomb is in a bad spot.

I really appreciate your alls help and input!

I used to live around Civic Center when it was worse than it is now, and wouldn't have an issue staying there if I just wanted a convenient clean bed. It is at 8th and Market. 5th and Market is the start of the West's best shopping. Market near 11th is one of the top long-standing restaurants in the City - and quite casual - Zuni Cafe - worth a meal, even alone. Civic Center is just a couple blocks from the hotel. (Many architecturally significant buildings)

Hotel Whitcomb has a couple of entries on the bedbug registry, whereas the Hyatt Regency does not. That alone would influence my decision. However, the neighborhood is also a reason to avoid. Like Eastbay1K I have also lived within a block of that hotel. The neighborhood is not exactly the South Bronx in the 80's, but it's really not that nice. Your trip to Bart will only be a few feet, but those few feet will often include an active drug deal. I wouldn't bother.

Life is short. We only live once. Who knows when you may "pass this way again". So....treat yourself !

The Hyatt Regency is a beautiful hotel. Is your MR occurring during November/December ? The hotel lobby -- often referred to as the largest in the country -- is decorated for the holidays with...300,000 lights ! And a snow making machine (kinda weak, though). And there is an outdoor ice skating rink right outside the hotel, and the Ferry Building, with all of its culinary offerings, is just a few steps away. The hotel is part of the 4-building Embarcadero Center, with lots of shopping. The vintage streetcars run right past the hotel to Fisherman's Wharf.

If you are taking BART from the airport, the Embarcadero Station will put you just a few steps from the hotel, right on wide, easily navigated Market Street.

A great choice for your MR. Select the Hyatt Regency for sure.

You had me sold on the Hyatt, haha. Unfortunately I read on their site that you have to be 21 to check-in, and I'm just 20.

I really appreciate you help, though!
