Fairmont President's Club - Hotel Vancouver vs. Fairmont Vancouver Airport

My family has a 19 hour layover at YVR on our return from Manila to Denver. Our flight from Manila gets into YVR at noon and the connecting flight leaves for DEN at 7:05 AM the next morning. I'm trying to choose a hotel for the night and can't decide between the Hotel Vancouver and the Fairmont Vancouver Airport. Hotel Vancouver is over $100 CAD cheaper but I have to factor in the cost of taxis both ways and the fact that we would have to check out very early to get out to YVR to check in by 5 AM. Although the one at the airport is much more expensive, it has the benefit of being at the airport and we wouldn't have to take our luggage out of the airport. We could take Skytrain into the city from YVR for the afternoon if we wanted.

Any suggestions of other factors to consider?

Oops.. I posted this before reviewing some of the other Vancouver threads. I think the one at YVR is best for my needs. I just wish our connection was a bit later in the day so we could stay downtown.

YVR is set up for day stays at reduced rates, because travellers just want a place to rest sometimes during layovers. YVR is a nicely updated hotel, and a quick stay credit for FPCers going through.

Yes, stay downtown and take the Canada Line upon arrival and a taxi back out to YVR as it seems a waste IMHO to spend that long of a layover at the airport even if it is in a very nice hotel I've enjoyed on occasion.

The Burrard Sky Train station is mere metres away from the Fairmont Vancouver and being central and within walking distance of shopping, sights like Canada Place & Gastown will give you enough to do during the day.

Just MHO.

GRGD, or NFAF Manual may help with the rates.. I would relax and stay at YVR for a 19 hour layover.. lots to do at YVR as there is a food court, restaurants, bit of shopping.. at YVR, you can do their exercise room, pool.. get a nice relaxing massage.. Wake up and be at check-in.

Use a u/g room cert and upgrade from Deluxe to Signature Room.. The Signature Room is like a junior suite.. shower and Air Jacuzzi all granite.. Automation controls electronically everything in the room (curtains, lights, radio, tv, etc).

You're sure OP has a cert?

And c'mon why go for food court "cuisine" at an airport when you can eat real good meals at any one of dozens of quality locations in downtown Vancouver?

FWIW I've stayed at both and for a shorter layover Fairmont YVR can't be beat but at 19 hours I say get out and enjoy Vancouver the city and it can be easily done from the central location of Fairmont Vancouver. Just MHO.

Interestingly enough I'm writing this at The Fairmont Vancouver Hotel. My view would be to stay at the Airport - able to dump your bags and freshen up etc and then take the Canada Line into town. To avoid paying the surcharge on the Skytrain buy a daypass from 7/11 or Pharmasave at the Airport for 9 bucks which is good for all day (ie your return trip and anything else you want to do eg SeaBus over to N. Vancouver which is a nice 15 min boat ride).

hope you have a good time.

I apologize Tcook052.. What you say does make sense..

I'm just thinking that the 5 am check-in would be a doozy for me.. so why not just check-in comfortably onsite, and relax? I'm not a morning person, and getting to the airport by 5 am would be the issue for me personally. If staying in Downtown, I would go to the Waterfront or PacRim for views of the bay.

Re: Upgrade.. www.perfectescapes.com .. don't need a cert necessarily for the upgrade.

And mountainmike makes even more; stay at Fairmont YVR but get out and experience the city and return later in the day to an early night and early morning with the convenience of being within the terminal. Best of both worlds. :)

Ok.. got me convinced now. Dropping off baggage and checking in the room makes it alot more relaxing.. steps away from car rental, jump in and scoot around town, come back for an early crash.

I probably hit up Richmond for a nice Chinese Seafood Restaurant, or go down Granville Street and score a Sushi Place. Jet down to Tom Lee's and check out any Hamburg Steinways on display, or over to the new Fazioli dealer.. With the rental car, that would make it that much more flexible, probably half of the tab of 2 cabs.. especially with an FT verified online coupon.

Having taken an assessment of how much checked luggage we'll have on our return, I think staying at YVR is the only viable option for us. It doesn't make a lot of sense to schlep our luggage all the way downtown and back, but a day trip to downtown via the Canada line sounds like a great way to go.

A wise choice to stay at YVR.. its' an excellent hotel, even for a stay that's more than one night.. Luggage remains checked.. flexibility to explore.. seems like the smart way to go!^
