I called to find out the cost if I change the return portion of an international flight. I was told that my particular fare (H) was sold out on that date and I'd have to pay a higher fare. In the course of the conversation I also found out that the fare going over was a B.
Sometime later I remembered the US fare code list on FT and found out that B can be upgraded w/miles. I called US and asked to upgrade the flight over.
"Sorry Sir, but you can't upgrade with the fare you have" she said.
"But I have a B fare going over and that's the one I wish to upgrade." says I, fingers crossed.
"I don't think you can do that, but let me check sir" and off she goes.
A few minutes later she comes back and admits that I can upgrade.
I would have never known enough to even attempt this without this thread:

Thanks folks!
