I just called the Silver Preferred service center to ask about extending or returning for mileage credit the 2 NA upgrade certs that my mom never used and the two system wide upgrades that my daughter never used. They all expire tomorrow.

For the NA's I was told something that I haven't seen posted before -- you can return up to 10 expired NA upgrade certs per year and ask to have them extended and US will replace them with new ones. After 10 per year, the only option is the usual 500 miles per. Of course, you can always opt for the 500 miles if you don't want an extension. The returned certs must have expired less than 6 months prior to returning them. Is this a new policy? Could the rep have just been misinformed (it sounded like she knew her stuff)?

For the SWU's I was told what others have reported, no extensions and only 500 miles credit for returning them. At that price, I think I'll hang onto them a while just in case I can get authorization to use them within the next couple of months.

The DM policy on expiring upgrades is really good. Last year I returned 10 which were expiring and got them reissued. I wish I had know about the option to return NAU for mileage credits because I had a few more which went up in smoke.

This is one of the policies which DM has which makes it a more friendly program. The upgrades give you value even if there is no space up front, or if you fly too many commuters or RJs.
