HI York, Tadcaster Road, York.
http://www.holidayinn.com/hotels/gb/en/york/yortr/hoteldetail

Stayed here on a last-minute booking the other night for £69 and was reasonably pleased. It has been given the HI brand 'refresh' and is nicer on the inside than it looks from the outside.

There is an executive floor (3rd) although I don't know if the rooms are any different from those on other floors. The water pressure in the shower wasn't very good. Everything else was what you'd expect at a refreshed HI. Apparently the hotel has nice views but it was dark and the weather was filthy so can't confirm.

Platinums get 20% off food and drink in the bar, which is useful if you're planning to eat. I got a few pence off a pint; better than nothing, I suppose.

About £6 and 10 minutes in a cab from York station, so not particularly central but not miles away either. It is handy for the race course. The hotel website says there is a park-and-ride bus stop nearby that takes 15 minutes into town but since I arrived very late and left very early I didn't make use of this.

If the HIX on the Malton Road was any cheaper I'd be tempted to try that instead (in this case it was the same price) but this place was ok.

You could do a lot worse than this hotel.

++++
Plat upgrade to Exec Room.
Very friendly Staff.
Decent rate £60 inc breakfast.
The pub across the road (Fox and Roman) was very good.

Not that central. It's about 1.5 miles to the centre of York - if you're feeling energetic. We walked but there did seem to be plenty of buses going past.
Plat gift is now 20% off food/drinks voucher - you used to get a free drink / half bottle of wine & even a jar of local sweets.
I agree the water pressure isn't great - my bath required a little planning.

----
Not much really but............
Rooms (especially bathroom) pretty compact - although king size bed was nice.
Old CRT TV with rubbish selection of channels.

I've been a reasonably regular guest here over the last few months. Agree with the above, it's not too bad at all.

Bus is £2 each way, every 10 or so minutes I think at peak times, though down to more like every half hour on a Sunday evening. Ample free parking on site.

My voucher the other week was just 20% off drinks - I'm not sure if this is a further enhancement, or just for Christmas... Breakfast is £9.50 if it's not in your rate.

Plat upgrade - usually get either an Exec room (free water and a kit kat), or one on the top (4th) floor facing the racecourse. Actually saw the racecourse the other day, the first time I've really seen it (for most of the year, the leaves on the trees obscure a lot of the view). I think the Marriott has the better racecourse views, though not stayed there yet.

ajamieson, I wouldn't rush to the HIX. It's well located for the bypass and not much else, is a bit tired inside, and even the standard HIX breakfast was a bit disappointing when I was there.

As a plat I got the 20% off food/drink I also got a free glass of wine on production of my welcome letter at the bar.

Another sign of recognition was I was recognised by the barman from my last stay a few months ago and he asked if I wanted the same again :)

Not sure if I got an exec room this time, I had water but no kit kat. On some stays here I've been given fruit bowls.

Advice for those arriving by train, you can buy a Plusbus addon for £3 which allows a days unlimited travel by bus within York. Means you can cheaply drop off your bags at the hotel, then head to the city centre and back to the hotel later on.

I know if you book tickets through east coast (http://www.eastcoast.co.uk/) it'll give you plusbus as an option if you select York as the destination. I think other train companies do the same (if not you can show your ticket at the ticket office at York to buy your plusbus).

Just got back from HI York. I am only lowly gold, but also got the water in the room for gold status and a 20% off food and drink from the restaurant, no glass of wine though :)

This was not an exec room, but have done that, the main difference between standard and exec are the flat screen TV, an adjustable office style chair and and a fridge (which never seems to be swithed on). The decor is slightly different with exec room having wooden screens at the window. Room size did not feel any different.
