Spain/Portugal/Gibraltar - Parking near the Museo Arqueológico in Madrid?

i know this is a longshot, but FT turns up some amazingly helpful info.

I'll be staying in an apartment in Madrid very near la Puerta de Alcala. I won't need a car much but will need one for a couple of days. It seems it would be much easier and cheaper to keep a rental car for a few days rather than rent and return, rent and return. Can anyone speak to the availability and cost of parking by the day in this area?

Many thanks.

I don't know for sure, but would assume that street parking will be out of the question (or at least very very difficult) - as I think that area is pretty much 100% ORA. ORA is the system whereby you need to buy a ticket for a limited period of time from a vending machine (there's usually one every couple blocks). Note that there are blue and green zones, with different time limits applicable. However, AFAIK, none of the ORA zones will let you park all day (or at least, not without "feeding the meter" -- technically not allowed, and subject to a ticket/fine, but many people do it).

I'm not sure about paid parking lots in that area.

Thanks. I figure street parking is not a good approach for the length of time it would be.

I see "Garaje Madrid S.A." on Villanueva near Lagasca but can't find any info as to whether it is contracted parking or public parking and no way to contact them.

If you call up a map of the area in www.viamichelin.com you can select through Extras / Directory / Transport to show public car parks.

But I'm not sure that it would be a lot cheaper to keep the car. Prices are probably about the same as here in Barcelona, so count on 30 / 35€ for a day of parking.

Thank you! I would never have found that. There are several--exactly what I needed to know. I had assumed that daily parking would be high but it might be Ok for a couple of days compared to the hassle factor of rent/return, repeat, etc.

I tried to park my rental ONCE in Madrid near the Prado.

It was possible in August, overnight, if you moved the car by, I think, 8 am. And, looked for a legal space on little tiny streets for a long, long time.

I wouldn't try it again. :td:
