I commute to BWI quite often an fly USAir as much as possible out of SNA, but recently
these flts I was supposed to be on have all been cacelled ahead of time recently
US20 LAXPIT 4/15 I was reacomm on afternoon flt out of sna my usual airport, because of this I missed easter dinner w/my family.
US93 BWIPIT 4/17 reacomm on BWILAX nonstop
and given voucher for super shuttle to SNA
For each of these flts I was contacted by RES
on 4/14. The website gave the reason as "an ajustment in the marketing schedule"
When I asked the USAir employees at sna they told me that the rumor is that USAir is running low on pilots because the hireing of new pilots for US was frozen by UA
They also said two of there flts were CXD that weekend out of SNA 148 SNAPIT 4/21 and
142 SNAPIT 4/22

Does anyone think this rumor is true?

Did you know that US SNA's station has over a 90% ontime rate for there two and only flts to PIT.

There is a hiring freeze on pilots. This was confirmed to me this weekend by a US pilot who I sat next to.

I don't know how US could be running low on their pilots half way through the month though. So I find that odd.

There was an issue at the end of last month when a number of flights were canceled b/c a large number of Airbus pilots had reached their 85 hours prematurely due to bad weather conditions and excessive unexpected delays.

Crap! I'm booked on an A319 from DFW-PHL in a week. Last nonstop of the day, too. Should I be weary??

I called reservations today about a hypothetical PHL-LAS trip in May, which is all Airbus service. I asked her about the possibility of it being cancelled, and she told me that they have already gone through and made their cancellations through June, and she was extremely blunt about it being due to a lack of flight crews. She made no excuses.

Originally, I switched from flying into SNA over to LAX because of the 319, when I was silver getting upgraded was impossible in the smaller craft. Last month,I noticed the PIT/SNA routes now have 757 equipment once daily and switched over for my next trip to SoCal. Wonder if the change is related.

the equip chg was done because of just what you described, the high level of premium travelers not getting upgs, also the A319 could not go out full because of the short runway at SNA, but supposedly the 757 can

Straight from the Chairman's reservation desk as of yesterday: "Avoid booking flights on Airbuses on the last 2 days of the month. There is a pilot shortage. We can't get enough of them type-rated on the Airbuses fast enough. Right now, there is a high cancellation rate for the last day and sometimes the day before."

(Thank goodness my SEA-CLT is on the 27th and that's it for the month.)

Interestingly enough, there used to be mostly 757s to SEA, now the rate has increased but all have been dropped to A319s. The Res agent wondered why they weren't using the 321s for that run yet, but guessed they would as more come into service, the 319s being an interim measure. That makes Upgrades rather tight, the 319s having 1/2 the seats of a 757, but what can you do? I guess the 757s are going somewhere else. I've noticed this 'fluidity' in aircraft here in MYR - middle of last year A319s showed up 2-3 times a day, then went back to 733/734, then back to 319, back to 733/734...
