I've got some friends in Russia that I would like to visit. None of the STAR partners fly to Syktyvkar, so it has been suggested that I find another method to get there. Can anybody give me some ideas of the easiest way to go from Moscow to Syktyvkar? Looking for something that is also pretty safe, or something that will not have me worry about having belongings stolen on the train ride..

Cheers,

Wiki lists these airlines and destinations from/to SCW:

* Nordavia (Moscow-Vnukovo, St-Petersburg)
* UTair Express (Adler/Sochi, Moscow-Vnukovo, St-Petersburg)

I heard bad things about both of those airlines. Any chance you know about the train system?

Not for that particular route, but if you do get platzkart train, get bottom bed - you can put your luggage inside - so don't have to worry about somebody stealing it.

UTAir is not that bad. They're actually quite a large airline.

The train will take you 26 hours. It leaves around 2pm from Yaroslavsky Vokzal and then gets into Sykyvkar the next day just before 4pm. It seems to run daily.

I've heard (and can tell myself) dreadful things about pretty much every airline in the industry. Shall I limit myself to riding trains and coaches?:)
Get the plane, mate. Service onboard will not be something to write back home about (same or slightly better than anything domestic in the US or Europe), but will get you there in only 2 hours. Riding a train or driving a car will be way too loooong.

I took UT Air from Moscow to Magnitogorsk this past June and was very pleasantly surprised. Vnukovo airport in Moscow is not exactly modern, but it is a lot easier to deal with than SVO or DME, being smaller. I even got a very edible meal at the cafe there. The plane was brand new (I forget whether it was a 737 or an A320, but it was one of the two), and on-board service was just fine. I had never even heard of this airline before, and was prepared for an old-school Soviet experience, but my expectations were well exceeded.

Nordavia was also fine when I flew them from LED to PEE last summer. Full flight, but it was on time, the food was fine and the bags all made it.
