Anything new in the Japanese restaurant scene?
We'll be in Crystal City and I know there is a small local restaurant on
23rd street. We're familiar with Kaz Bistro. Anything worthwhile to come
into the city to sample?

Check out the latest WashPost Fall Dining Guide:

Kushi Izakaya & Sushi is a new Japanese restaurants on there that sound amazing. And it sounds like the Omakase Sushi Counter within Sushi Taro is a once-in-a-lifetime treat.

While this place isn't new, I've always enjoyed Sushi Ko.

It's in Glover Park, a neighborhood just a little ways up Wisconsin Avenue from Georgetown.

Btw, another good dining guide for the DC area can be found in Washingtonian magazine.

Restaurant was renovated and moved up-market about 18 months ago.
Expensive, but worth it IMHO.

Thanks for the info.
Sounds like the Omakase Sushi Counter is worth a trip back for a [very special]
birthday present ( similar to what we had in Tokyo).

I'll third the Sushi Taro recommendation - it's got a long history and is definitely one of my favorites.

Makoto on MacArthur Blvd (kinda out of the way location) comes highly recommended by my brother who lives nearby, but I've never been myself.

i wish i had heard about sushi taro before.

my spouse and i have had bad luck with sushi in DC. our first attempt was sushi ko on the border between DC and maryland. mediocre fusion (isn't that redundant?) food. an attempt at a place in gaithersburg (sushi oishii i think) was only slightly better. and last night we tried raku in bethesda. the fact that it scored highly in "best of bethesda" should have served as a warning. granted, the uni was fabulous, but i can't commend it (and the tempura soba was swimming in almost pure soy sauce, rendering it inedible). they don't even do hand rolls.

There is an interesting and detailed/long blog post of someone's omakase experience at sushi taro here (http://theoffalo.com/2013/03/winter-omakase-counter-at-sushi-taro/).

Matsutake, which is landside in DCA is one of the better options at the airport.

check:

and:
http://www.donrockwell.com/

both are a little hard to navigate. the usual joke is that by the time it appears in the washington post, it's old, stale, and overpriced.
