US Airways Dividend Miles (Pre-FlightFund Merger) - Fly 16 Segments or 12,500 miles for Gold

I got a flyer in the mail last week from US saying they would upgrade me to Preferred Gold (I'm Preferred now) for flying 16 segments or 12,500 miles between March 1 and May 31. The Gold status will be good through the end of Feb. 2001. The flyer indicated I was already registered for the promo.
Provided there's no extended strike, it will be pretty easy for me to hit that, so Gold here I come.

harold, that would be awesome for me... I was Pref Plus last year and am now only Pref Silver. I have over 16,000 miles planned for March and April alone... I hope the postman delivers for me as well!

While interesting, US has got to be kidding. Clearly business is hurting since no one will book with them with a strike looming. I haven't seen the offer and even if I get it, I doubt I will be booking any must-do travel with US.

MileKing,
Well it's working on me. I have two trips between now and the strike date, and you can bet that they're both going to be on US. That will put me half-way toward the 16 segment goal. I'm even temporarily foregoing my preferred airline, Delta, and 10,000 bonus SkyMiles miles to chase this offer from US.
Eh, I don't think the strike will pan out. I just booked reservations on March 26th. If it does pan out, I figure the airport will be virtually shut down so I don't care http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
As per the promotion I hope my wife gets the offer. She's Preferred Silver right now.
We already have 9,000 miles of travel and 12 segments (I assume they are counting the minimum 500 per segment) and another four segments/3000 miles isn't going to be tough. Especially is US has a sale after this all clears up to get business back.

As always, my sense of timing leaves a lot to be desired.

I got back from a trip to Rome on 2/28 and I have a trip to SFO booked for 6/2.
Oh well, I still have a trip to LAX in April and another possible west-coast trip coming up.
BTW, if any of you are looking for 'mileage runs' in conjunction with this promo, check fares to ALB. Southwest starts flights from there on 5/7. From 5/7 to 8/3, all the majors (including USAir) are matching their fares (($198 RT to all of SW's destinations).

Question here:
Does US have a challenge program to get elite status easily? I'll be flying enough to get 14,300 normal miles (x 2 for the promo) in April. My account has been inactive for some 7-8 years otherwise.

When I called US to make sure that all was set for the Gold challenge, the rep also mentioned that there was a challenge at the same time for Silver. (wonder if there's one for Chairman Preferred?)
The big question is was this a selective marketing program or is it open to anyone? Given that there have been no broadcast messages on it from US, my suspicion is that it is targeted. I suggest you call US and find out if you're in the hopper for the challenge and beg to get in if you're not.
Given the miles you're going to be flying in April, you should be on the path to Gold since the program runs through May 15th.

My wife received an offer for Silver status if she flies 6250 miles or ten segments by May 31. She had status in 1999 but doesn't this year.
At the risk of upsetting those who have earned their status with US, I was wondering how the current double miles promo would affect this offer. Since the double miles count as status miles, we are hoping that she will now only need to fly 3125 miles. The only trip she has currently planned is from WAS to PBI. If she makes takes two segments to fly one direction and three the other, I think she may qualify for Silver in just the one inexpensive trip. Is my math correct for the itinerary below?
DCA-BWI 37 actual miles = 500 min = 1000 total status miles
BWI-TPA 848 miles x 2 = 1696 status miles
TPA- PBI 178 actual = 500 = 1000
PBI PHL 955 miles x 2 = 1910
PHL DCA 127 = 500 =1000
Total status miles = 6606
I think this is a valid routing because the US online reservation system does offer it to me. Is it really possible that silver status could be this easy and inexpensive ($165)?

Harold:
Which line should one call at US to see if one can join the challenge. I called the normal service line this AM and they told me there was no challenge of any sort and one can get eite status only in the normal way.

dhacker: Looks good to me... I don't see why not. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/smile.gif
terenz: It appears as if the elite challenges are targetted and being offered to former elite status holders who did not re-qualify for a particular level... not the general public who did not hold elite status with US Airways last year. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/frown.gif

I called US today(1-336-661-8390) and unfortunatley they won't honor the double miles as status miles for the promotion. I probably should have called before posting, but hopefully someone else learned something as a result.
I also took a chance and asked if I could register for the promotion even though only my wife received the offer. The rep said yes and proceeded to register me and my daughter and my mother for this promo. Since my daughter and mother are flying to Germany on US in a few weeks, that should do the trick for Silver status for them!

dg1, I don't mind getting denied an upgrade so you Chairman's Pref's can sit up front, but your wife too!!! Man, that's hittin' below the belt. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
BTW, I received the Gold promo in the mail... I flew the miles... I am now a Gold Preferred!!! http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif

Sorry geo but your fears have come through -- now my wife is Gold Preferred ... the last segments came through and they bumped her up the status chain.
We already get comments we both travel a lot as US1 and US3... my thought is the family that travels together stays together <Grin>

dg1,
I thought Gold Preferred was US2. At least, that is what my wife and I were listed as on the manifest for a flight we had yesterday.

Gold is US2, but if they are with a US1 on the same itinerary, they are treated like US1's. Not to worry...UAL will take care of all that.
US1 == Chairman's Preferred
US2 == Gold Preferred
US3 == Silver Preferred
To clarify, I was talking about when my travelled with me as a US3, we got a lot of comments about both of us travelling. As per the United remark, <sigh>. I keep reading articles here in Pittsburgh about how great this is going to be. I feel like I'm watching cows cheerfully heading to slaughter!
