Midwest - Houghton County Memorial Airport without Flying

I'm helping out a friend who hates flying in small planes. Alex wants to travel from LAX to the Houghton County Memorial Airport area. I do not know the exact town but it is close this airport.
Where is the closest airport he can fly to in a large airline? Then he would drive or take a bus the rest of the way. Perhaps Marquette MI or somewhere in Wisconsin?
Suggestions on driving/buses and planes very much appreciated!

The closest city that has mainline metal would be Chicago or Minneapolis, I think. Actually, looking up Farecompare, Houghton/Hancock has Skywest RJ service, which isn't that bad. Driving from Chicago/Minneapolis is about 7 hours, which I would not recommend in the winter unless your friend knows how to drive in white out conditions. It's very possible for Houghton to have a significant amount of snow in November (record snow fall 62" at airport!). Marquette, MI is about 1-2 hours away, with similar service (RJ).
Your friend should ask for some Valium from his physician and just fly in. :)

He could do Milwaukee. But still I would do the RJ.

Green Bay would be closer than Milwaukee. Delta operates both mainline and regional service to GRB. At least one flight a day out of DTW is on a DC9. Delta also has regional jet service (50 seat plane) into Marquette, Mich from DTW and MSP.
