I was looking at some fares for a may flight SFO-PHL-BUF. they were asking around $980+ for a one way ticket and when i searched for a roundtrip ticket.. i got a quote of about $377. Would I be allowed to purchase the roundtrip ticket and discard the return portion?? What are the rules regarding this?

Thanks for your help,
Jason

More commonly known as "throw-away ticketing." If you use the search feature, you will find a lot of topics on it.

It's definitely against the rules. The question is if they catch you and if they really care. I've never heard of it happening with US but in theory they could debit you or your travel agent the difference in fare, remove your frequent flyer miles for the one-way, or more drastic measures...

Good luck in your decision. As Tute says there is a lot of information about it on the board, and also at www.1travel.com (http://www.1travel.com) under Rules of the Air.

(1) Most (if not all) airlines say this is wrong, illegal, irreligious, anti-American, demoralizing, immoral, fattening etc.

(2) MisterNice sez........no problama (ever)

I do it occasionally, and I have yet to be imprisoned, deported, been billed, lost any FF miles (or weight for that matter) etc. As for any problems with the rumored TA penalties, just buy your ticket directly with the friendly airline.

I rememeber that I bought a AA ticket on the phone. I had flown from MUC (Germany) to MIA. As it was an open jaw ticket, I had to fly from NYC back to MUC. The AA agent told me the prize for a one way ticket and I asked him how much a roundtrip would be. He replied that this would be against the rules. Nevertheless he sold me the roundtrip ticket. I used only one way and nothing happened to my AA miles. Good luck. I did not realise that I would do something wrong.

jason, I'll state the obvious and say that you should make sure you intend to fly the "outbound" portion of the roundtrip http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/biggrin.gif.
