My brother has quite generously offered to give me 50K US Air miles.

I understand that US Air members can use their miles on AA. Are the miles needed for awards the same as for AA? AA requires 50K miles for a trans-atlantic upgrade. Is this the same if you use US Air miles for an AA award?

As my wife and I fly on AA, we would much rather use the miles on AA than on US Air. We are planning an Italy vacation and we would like to fly on AA to earn base miles, and use the US Air miles to upgrade one of our tickets. Is it possible to use the US Air miles for upgrades on AA? I have checked on the US Air web site but no specific information was provided on using miles for upgrades on AA.

Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

Sorry onedog, no can do. US miles are only good for limited awards on AA, which only include flight awards. Upgrades are not one of the things that you can get with US miles on AA.

Onedog, unfortunately, you may only combine US and AA miles to redeem certain awards, and upgrades are not amongst these. You can combine US and AA miles to redeem a business or first class R/T ticket to Europe, but not for an upgrade on AA. I'd post the link to the info on the AA site where it lists awards for which you can combine miles, but the AA site is down. Nevertheless, I hope that information helps! :-)

onedog: Sorry, but US miles can not be used for AA upgrades. They also may not be used for any AA partner airline awards (oneworld, etc.). Here is a list of the specific awards you can get on AA with US miles.

Thanks everyone for the super speedy replies. The answers weren't exactly the ones I wanted to hear, but at least I know the real answer and I can plan some other way to get to Italy with my wife. I'll most likely now just save the US Air miles for a domestic trip.

onedog: email me for a suggestion... not one that the airlines should know about but one I'm happy to share with you (or any FT'er for that matter) that might help you reach your objective.
