Argentina - Argentina Census, Wednesday October 27, 2010

For anybody that's visiting Argentina on October 27, please note that most everything will be closed until 20:00 (by law, with criminal penalties for non-compliance) . That includes supermarkets, kioscos, restaurants, bars, theaters, etc.

Public transportation is supposed to run on a Sunday schedule, however I don't know what the availability of taxis will be like during the day.

At least one member of each household is required to stay at home to meet with a census worker. The workers will verbally ask questions and fill in a government form with a special pencil :) The lucky ones will only have to answer the 35-question short form.

I have no idea how they are going to count hotel guests, but the government definitely intends to count tourists. If you are staying at a hotel that day you should check what the situation is regarding hotel food services.

[¿Los turistas también tienen que ser censados?
Sí, los turistas deben ser censados ya que el censo de hecho es como una foto instantánea de la República. ]

http://www.censo2010.indec.gov.ar/index_preguntas_f.asp

The government gazetted the requirements last Wednesday, only 7 days before the census ...

Here's a pdf of the census form, of course it's password-protected so you can't print it ...

You know, this came close to happening. I thought about going through SCL to fly into AEP, but between the uncertainty about closing dates and the long SCL connection time, I am flying LIM/EZE (on the 26th, just after medianoche). This clearly, and not the census, is why you are fleeing the country :D

LIM.... hmmm.... do you know if the SCL to JFK flights operated by LAN go directly or do they also puddle jump in LIM...??? I cant get the quirky LAN website to tell me and the 0800 number is manned by morons that take about 20 minutes on hold before they try to communicate some weird dialect...

Nopo. It works better for me now to keep banking the miles in the Alaska Mileage Plan - I earn EQMs on LA. On the intercontinental flights, I am either redeeming miles or in paid discounted J. If I was flying in Clase Basura, I'd investigate Lanpass or another OW program.

After my latest carry on at EZE when trying to leave this country it might be best if I hide on Wednesday or they might deport me.
Over two years after I first applied and I'm still waiting for my DNI.

I am reminded of that book, what was it called, Un Argentino Humilde?

My vuelos nacionales in Chile are in the one and only class the country has. Meanwhile, back on topic, what to buy for lunch on Wednesday when I get there Tuesday. :) I may have to learn how to turn my oven on :o I always seem to heat things up in the toaster/oven. I will, however, be armed to cook. I am importing what will possibly be the most valuable thing in my place - a 200 sq' roll of Reynolds Aluminum Foil. That, and peppercorns.

Yes of course... I stand corrected. Actually, Juan Francisco's list I already know by heart.... he has been drilling it to me for the past 2 weeks in such a way that at this point I can recite it backwards in Sanskrit... no need to write that down in no list... :D ^

Is there a shortage of Reynolds Wrap in Buenos Aires? We're coming down later this week and could bring some as presents.

The real Reynolds Wrap does not exist here... they dont import it. The local stuff is not usable..... I will kill for the Heavy Duty Version of the Reynolds wrap.... will trade for Malbec... :D

Do they make a Food Service version roll, one of those extra large and heavy rolls...??? :D

I've never heard of Reynolds Wrap.

I use PRO-LUMINIO USO PROFESIONALL in a 5 metre roll. Perfectly adequate and comparable to anything available in the UK. ^

Gaucho;
they sell it in 500 and 1000 foot rolls!

http://www.amazon.com/Global-Industrial-Heavy-Duty-Aluminum-Rolls/dp/B003XWCQH2/ref=sr_1_38?s=miscellaneous&ie=UTF8&qid=1288130683&sr=1-38

Those prices are BS too, you should be able to find a 1000' long, 18" wide heavy duty role for under $100. No need to order online and wait either, just about any restaurant supply store where you're traveling this week will have it:

So the real question is, are you crazy enough to haul 10 kilos of aluminum foil back to Argentina??? I would love to see the customs inspectors react to that^

So, most things are already closed, people are eating/drinking what they can while they can, there are a lot of police out (probably to enforce the midnight closures) and I now have my late night salad, and another salad to go with my lunch tomorrow. Dippy Doohaha forgot to put the oil and vinegar in my bag.

That's 10 lbs (4.5 kg)/roll. I hope they last you a while! My wife and I enjoyed meeting you and seeing your shop. The wine was excellent, we look forward to sampling more when we get home. Also, your recommendation for Fred B. (http://www.silverstarcar.com/) was spot on. What a wonderful introduction to Buenos Aires. He was waiting for us at the airport (even though our flight was early), and waited with us for 20 minutes at the apartment until the owner showed up. He also provided us a free loaner cell phone for our stay, and gave us a great overview of things to do in Buenos Aires on the drive in from the airport.
