I'm traveling to MEX in December along with my wife. We're visiting someone there, but we're also looking to go to Riviera Maya for about week (some 5-9 days). I would like to avoid Cancun, but I'm otherwise flexible. I'm even open to Belize.

Where should I look for deals from MEX? I found a zillion websites with deals from the US to various places in Mexico, but I have yet to come across one that is flexible enough to have MEX as a starting point.

Thanks a lot for your input!

Look at AM's Gran Plan (http://www.granplan.com/paquetes) deals. (Not sure if there's an English version). MX had something similar, called VTP, which was a widely popular brand. Gone now...

Consulting a travel agent might be the best course of action, in your situation.

About travel in December: The period from Xmas through the first week of January is a period of congestion in most beach resort areas, and transportion options become limited and costs rise (hotels as well as airline tickets). So, if you plan to be traveling during that period - book now rather than later and be prepared for the congested conditions and higher prices.

Thanks for the advice. I'll keep looking. I'll be there early December; I'm thinking since it's between Thanksgiving and Xmas it should be ok in terms of crowds (and prices)

Until December 13, it is low seasson, as schools in Mexico are still active. You will not have a problem finding cheap acommodation. If you want to fly there, try VivaAerobus.com.mx or Volaris.com.mx, the cheapest options. Try to avoid AM, as their Gran Plan combos are expensive. Go better with Interjet´s Intertours, for a Flight + Hotel deal, either in CUN or Riviera Maya.

You will for sure have to fly from MEX or TLC to CUN, as flights to Chetumal (if you want to go to Belize) are a lot more expensive, as only 1 airline serves the area (Aviacsa and Mexicana use to serve it, but they are gone). Belize from MEX, forget it, there aren´t flights from Mexico´s Capital City.

If you get cheap airline tickets from the LCC, then getting hotel deals before December 13 will be really easy. Try some Spanish All Inclusives in Riviera Maya, you will be amazed about the quality of its food, drinks and service. Riu, Iberostar or Barcelo Premium are some of the best out there.
