I was planning on staying in the East Bay next month for a business trip of 3 nights near UC Berkeley. I was last at the Claremont 4 years ago. It was ok. Is this the most comfortable and "nicest" hotel in the area? Has any new hotels cropped up? Thanks.

Yes.
I actually had my wedding at the Claremont, we find it to be the best hotel in that area. If you want to go into sfo there are obviously a lot of great choices, but for Berkeley, and OAK the Claremont is the nicest, and the prices are not obscene.
Best Wishes,

Never stayed there but have attended events in the meeting rooms. Soundproofing in those rooms was terrible, we kept hearing what was going on in the surrounding rooms. It does a lot of event business which means parking can be a hassle as well.
I guess the rooms could be better, but I wouldn't bet on it.
This is an old, old hotel run, I believe, by the city of Berkeley. It might be the best in the immediate area, but I wouldn't expect luxury.

It's nice but not truly luxurious like you'd expect from the outside. The restaurants and spa are great tho.

This area has nothing "luxurious." Even many pro sports teams while visiting Oakland stay in SF. The Claremont may be as good as it gets for Oakland/Berkeley, probably as far as to the W-Newark. I've never heard much more than a "meh" about the Dubbulchree at the Berkeley Marina. Not a really nice hotel along the 80 corridor from downtown SF to downtown SAC. Emeryville hotels are meh, but you get points. The Holiday Inn Express on University is really expensive and looks pretty crappy, so that is pretty telling for supply/demand around here.
