Hello All,
My wife and I are planning a trip to Houston from Oct 25-30 and we're on a pretty tight budget, so we're looking a hotels around the $50-$70/nt. range. I'm planning on booking through priceline or orbitz and snag some good deals. Any suggestions on nice areas where we can look for hotels? Transportation not a problem as we will be renting a car. Thanks so much!

What are you looking to do while in Houston? Without any knowledge of your specific plans, I'd probably recommend the Galleria/Post Oak area.

Hello,
Basically we're going to be tourists. We want to check out the Space Center, Galveston beach, etc. And of course shopping as well. We're just looking for a safe area, anything scenic would also be nice:)

I'm not sure scenic is a word I'd use to describe any of Houston, but most of Houston is fairly safe. You probably want to avoid downtown due to parking issues and lack of things to do in the evening.
I agree with SAT Lawyer's Post Oak/Galleria recommendation - lots of nice hotels, plenty of restaurants and shopping. Also Westchase area is fine, in fact, most of West and Southwest Houston are OK. North Houston has tons of motels due to the airports, but not much else. East and Southeast are the areas you may wish to avoid, if any.

I'm with SAT Lawyer, and would check the offerings and specials of some of the down-market brands of the big players (Marriott, Hilton) for specials, but reading your plans (Galveston, NASA, etc.) might also look at the same sort of "deals" out the Gulf Freeway close to HOU and NASA. Business in Houston has not been "off" as much as in the rest of the country, so a lot of rate-restricted business travelers keep the down market brands fuller than expected during the week. One advantage to Houston...you don't need to pack much (offset by the - to many - big disadvantage...you have to have a car!). With your visit in mind, I'd pack light and maybe change hotels at least once.

Desi, something else to look at during your visit, city pass. When I have hosted tourists to the area, I normally suggest they use this (I've even used it during my times staying at my Houston home as a "local"). You pay a flat fee and get access to NASA, and many of the museums and local attractions.

I suggest this as a great way to see many of the sights for a good price.

I took my now ex to Houston for a short break a couple of years ago.
Stayed in the Downtown Doubletree using points. Had a good time. The Aquarium restaurant and Hard Rock Cafe were a short walk away.
I can remember a bar, the flying saucer or something like that was quite god as well. Also had a good night at the horse racing. The buffet was very reasonable, and we had a table looking right onto the racetrack.

Downtown has changed a lot in the last few years and now has much more going on at night.
