Need to be in Houston for a couple of days... looking to hit the best Chinese restaurants in town... dont have to be high-end, love eateries but will also go to a $$$$$ place if the food warrants it.

If Houston is like DFW, it probably isn't known for good Chinese. I'm certain they have a couple of PF Changs and several Pei Wei's around but in my experience, Chinese food in Texas just isn't very good by world traveler standards. It's in the "Panda Express" category... i.e. you can get similar food in any shopping or strip mall - bland and full of MSG.

Understood... I guess I will hit PF Changs then... ;)

I disagree. The ethnic commercial enclaves on Bellaire Blvd offer great variety and some good choices. Some of the best Vietnamese food (outside of Saigon) I've tried has been in Houston (and I recall that there are even a few passable dim sum places). Check some of the local sources and reviewers. For Asian food, I suspect that Houston offers "mo' & better" than the DFw Metroplex. P.F. Chang's or its sistership, Pei Wei, would be far off my list (and much unimpressed with P. F., I would more quickly visit Pei Wei had I no choices but "chains". One of my favorite "pho" joints in out in the almost white collar Houston suburb of Katy (where there's also a little Turkish/Persian place which serves skewered lamb to die for).

Thanks for the Persian options.... that is one of my favorite hard-to-find cuisines... :D ^

IIRC, it's named of all things, "Shish Kebab", next door to the Target on Mason (or Fry) Road in Katy just South of IH10, about 20 miles West of the Loop 610. Strip center surroundings, no decor, mostly take out, but great Persian style rice and as noted the skewered lamb. Acceptable side dishes/condiments. Inexpensive and worth the drive. There's a fancier Turkish place in the Village, behind Rice, but I don't think the lamb compares, and the rice is not done in what I think of as Persian style (dry, browned at bottom, much work in prep).

Houston has some amazing Chinese and Vietnamese food. Please do not go to PF Chang's!! There are countless restaurants in strip mall after strip mall of new-Chinatown on Bellaire between Gessner past the Beltway. You can easily just drive around there and find a place that appeals to you.

One of the more famous ones that has been around for a long time with a few celebrity visits is Fung's Kitchen (http://www.eatatfungs.com/index.php). San Tong Snacks is good for a cheap, hole in the wall, place for dumplings, soup noodles, and chop plates. I could give you some other places if you have something more specific in mind.

You should also check out the Yelp (http://www.yelp.com/c/houston/chinese) page for Houston Chinese food for user reviews and to narrow down what sort of Chinese/Vietnamese food you want (Taiwanese, Szechuan, dumplings, pho, dim sum, Hunan, etc.).

Gaucho100K,

hope it is not too late for recommendation.
Any eateries on Bellaire west and south of West Beltway 8 offer good ethnic Chinese food. Fufu Cafe is one example. Other eateries in that Fufu Cafe complex will fill your chow need too.

Bellaire Blvd is a small, long, thin country in far eastern Asia, a string of ethnic retailers of several ethnic and culinary heritage. Venture there.

I love Thai food and recently tried Morningside Thai on Morningside Dr. in Houston, which is west of the Med Center. The food was very good - prices are typical of any local Thai place.
