Delta SkyMiles - Price jump question
I was about to pay for a ticket for next week and clicked to purchase when it kicked me back out to the original screen. When I went through again, the ticket had jumped $170 (one of the legs is now a K fare). How can that happen that I have it ready to purchase and it does that? I was a little frustrated!

Happens often.

Pretty simple, really. Someone else bought the last seat in that fare bucket.

Well, at least that is what we are told often happens.
You may have some luck going to Orbitz or Expedia to get the lower price issued if it has only been a couple of hours since your Delta search. There is sometimes a delay in price availability that can work in your favor.

Nobody from Delta has ever told me that. You don't think their inventory fluctuates greatly in minutes? How many tickets do they sell in a day? I don't know, a few hundred thousand?

That is actually why I was rushing to get it from Delta - orbitz had already jumped so I went back to Delta and saw it for the same price it was before. Oh well, keep searching!

It's also possible that even though you got kicked out, the system was still holding the ticket for you, which was also the last in the bucket. Try again in a few minutes.

That is a really good point!

Really, not disagreeing with you, indufan.
But I have had instances where I have seen the same thing as the OP, then opened a new browser -- or a different computer -- and magically, the original price shows up instead of the higher price.
Just sayin'......

I do appreciate the help and that does make sense - however, still not able to book it. Oh well, hopefully something else will drop in the next day or two. Thanks for the help, everyone!

And that actually makes a little bit of sense. You are taking it out of inventory yourself. A technical problem that Delta ought to fix, sure.

Frustrating, because that means someone literally snagged the last ticket in that bucket, right in front of you. It's kind of like being caller number 9 and 11 when caller #10 gets a prize.
Yeah keep trying, and hope it comes down. Alternately, you may want to buy the segment that is still at the low price, and lock that in. This way if the other segment doesn't come back down, you won't lose the cheaper one.
