Spain/Portugal/Gibraltar - Spain: Extended weekend in Mallorca

Hi,

I will be flying with mates to Palma de Majorca for an extended weekend. As I have never been to the island, I am wondering if anyone had recommendations as to where to stay.

We are basically 3 guys in our late twenties, are looking for a place close to the sea, nice old town to walk around, decent selection or restaurants and an ok (but matured) nightlife.

I think Palma is probably the biggest city on the island that can offer us all that.

Also - instead of doing the hotel thing we were maybe thinking of renting an apartment. Does anyone know of any apartment rental sites in Palma?

Thanks!

Depends very much on your budget, whether or not you want to bath, what you understand as "mature" nightlife and when you want to go. Palma offers a lot, however has no direct access to the beaches. The little villages don't offer too much outside the season, Playa de Palma is a hell in summer (too much nightlife) but gets pretty nice in fall (still some nightlife). I sometimes escape German winter (November in Mallorca is pretty nice) and stay in an apartment house in Playa de Palma and we explore the island by car.

I make regular social and work related trips to Palma and it does tick all your boxes. The old town, behind the cathedral, is a pleasant area to explore. There are some great places to dine and to go for drinks plus a good selection of places to stay.

You could try this website (http://www.ownersdirect.co.uk/search_results.asp?specific_location_vchar=palma&action.x=0&action.y=0&action=search&class=advanced&arrival_offset_int=-1) to find an apartment to rent in Palma. I've not used it myself, but on first glance it looks like there are plenty of options to suit all budgets. Probably the old town or the Paseo Marítimo would be the best locations for a weekend break IMO.

We recently returned from Mallorca, and had a great time we got a great place in Sa Coma through Vadingo.com. They negotiate a private offer for you. We saved at least 30%.

The entire holiday was great. We have 2 kids, so we needed a kid-friendly place. Sa Coma had much to offer.

We stayed here: http://www.vadingo.com/en/hotels/spain/mallorca-northeast/sa-coma/407-protur-sa-coma-playa-and-spa/629-suite

But for a couple looking for a romantic weekend, I highly recommend Cala Millor - There is a lot to do in Cala Millor, it is a huge beach, with many restaurants and bars, but not at all crazy or wild... and it is also a short walk to Cala Bona, which has a quaint harbour and romantic seafront restaurants.

here is a pretty good place on the beach in Cala Millor:
http://www.vadingo.com/en/hotels/spain/mallorca-northeast/cala-millor/511-aparthotel-dunas-cala-millor/935-apartment-one-bedroom

Palma is a great place, but has no real beaches. It is all harbour. If you want to saty in Palma, here's another great hotel, right in the middle of old town - the most romantic and exciting place in Palma:
http://www.vadingo.com/en/hotels/spain/mallorca-palma/palma/246-hotel-convent-de-la-missio/451-double-room

Anyway, good luck, wherever you stay. Mallorca is a really beautiful and diverse destination!

I recommend trying Vadingo.com. We have some other friends who also got a very good deal through them.

Good luck and have a great time!

Ami.

Can you provide more info re: November in Mallorca? (Esp. interested in weather, but any info welcome.) Many thanks.

Weather in November is well, not great. The temperatures average 16-22c in the day, 12-15 at night. The chances of rain are high. When it isn't raining, it's very nice, though.

Also, many of the resorts close down by end of October. Palma is really the only place that stays active all year.

Hope that helps.
