Good morning,

I'm looking at redeeming some points for a short stay in NYC around the holidays (Dec 20-22). This will be my wife's first trip to the city so I want to make it memorable. I've narrowed my search to either the Ramada Plaza New Yorker or the Wingate Manhattan Midtown which are just a couple of blocks from eachother

At the New Yorker, I can reserve a Queen room with an "Empire State Building" view.

At the Wingate, I can reserve a "loft" king room. Not sure exactly what this means, but I'm assuming it is at least a little bigger than the normal king rooms. The Wingate, of course, also includes a full hot breakfast which is a plus.

Anyone who has stayed at either or both have any advice on which hotel I should go with?

Thanks!

I did stay in Wingate Manhattan Midtown, Its a nice hotel and the rooms were very clean and the rooms were really big for New york standard(~275 to 300 sq.ft). Only drawback was most of the rooms have no view or just the view of the next building which was within 20 feet. Otherwise its a great place to stay in NYC

I stayed at the New Yorker. Cute, old-fashioned lobby but that's where it ends and that's too bad. I loved the locatio and the Art Deco feel of it. However past the lobby, the hotel is downright dirty. I mean, filthy. Down to brown spots of something flung on the wall. Unfortuately I cannot and will not recommend. I later stayed in a much cleaner HOSTEL. I would avoid regardless of cost or situation.

Thanks for your input! I was thinking the New Yorker would be more fun because of the Art Deco vibe and some good views of the empire state building/river, but cleanliness is way more important in my book. Add that with the large room sizes at the Wingate and the free hot breakfast, and the Wingate is going to be my choice. I can deal with looking straight at a building for a couple of days :)

Good choice. I assume you're not going all the way to NYC just to sit in a hotel and look out the window! Please give use feedback on the Wingate (a brand I like.) Happy travels.

When was the last time you stayed at the New Yorker? It was recently renovated and is actually a nice hotel. Before the renovation, I'd say your description would have been accurate but its not the case now.

The Wingate is quite nice as well. The Loft Rooms are about the same size as the regular rooms but have very high ceilings and that definitely gives the feeling of more space.

Trying to decide which property to book: I'm leaning toward the New Yorker because I'm travelling with my family and they're offering a "suite" for the same number of points (16,000/night). Otherwise, I'd probably lean towards the Wingate for its newness and the free breakfast.

Any more experiences at these properties? The tripadvisor reviews are good for both of them.

BTW, these places seem like a great deal using Rewards points.

Just wanted to report back with my experiences from my 20-22 Dec stay. Overall, our 2 night stay at the Wyndham Wingate Manhattan Midtown was really good. The location is great, especially for a Christmastime visit--half a block from Macy's, 6 blocks south of Times Square.

Breakfast was good but not as spectacular as some of the posters on tripadvisor seemed to indicate. I think this was a symptom of how busy this hotel was as our first morning every single seat in the restaurant was completely full and we had to stand to eat. Juices were from a machine and tasted watered down. The coffee was just ok the first morning, but much better the second. They had good fresh bagels from the bagel shop next door. Hot items were eggs & bacon the first day and eggs & sausage the second. Pastry selection was pretty good and there were lots of different cereal options. Overall, good for a free breakfast. Suspect it is better when less crowded.

Room

The room size was really good for New York City. We booked a "loft" ,but I'm not sure that the loft rooms are any bigger than the others. I believe the front desk attendant told me that the ceilings were higher (and they are on the higher floors). The rooms were well furnished, had nice bathrooms with really good shower fixtures and water pressure.

Negatives--the in room coffee maker didn't have regular coffee (only Decaf and teas). Additionally, there were no stirrers or sugars & creams. Our door was partially broken (the actual wood)--it looked like someone had tried to kick it in at some point. Also, when we left our room we had to use the key to unlock the door so it would latch. The fridge and microwave were useful, however housekeeping hadn't done a great job and the fridge was full of food from the previous tenant.

Other info
Front desk staff and other staff were friendly. Didn't use the gym but it looked ok--some cardio equipment and a couple weight band machines. Free Wireless service in the hotel worked fine for us. Street noise was not an issue, but I'm not sure if it would be a problem on a lower floor (we were on floor 16, second from top). No real views to speak of.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this hotel. It's small size made for a relaxed and less hectic experience (aside from the busy breakfast). I'm sure the Ramada would be nice but for a quick 2 day visit, this was perfect. We hardly spent any time in the rooms so the lack of views wasn't a big deal for us.
