I'm happy to say 'De Island Best Western' hotel right on Bar Beach worked out fine and am very happy to recommend it to anyone who cares to listen. This is a solid 4* property at international standard.

I was refurbished last year and there's a new South African GM in place - an affable, friendly and detail oriented man with a hunger for improvement. Rates were good - $220 p/n incl. breakfast (this is VI, mind). The rooms were small enough but the view of the beach were absolutely smashing. Rooms were well furnished and had fabulous hard Nigerian matresses. Flatscreen TVs with BBC channels, CNN and as much African Gold as you can shout at. Digital safe, tea and coffee with kettle, emergency lighting (which worked) inside the rooms for the hourly power cuts. Bathrooms were clean and the GM told me they had just installed a brand new water purification plant, while there was no shelf in the spacious bathrooms, there was a tray of amenities - shampoo (and quite nice too!) conditioner, mouthwash and hand cream, pack of tissues, shower cap etc. Hot water actually available.

Internet is free and works pretty well for Lagos.

Food was fine, if nothing special. Breakfast had a selection of standard things (pancakes, sausages, boilled egs yoghurts etc. ) as well as the standard local things - pounded yam etc. Dinner was available as a buffet -chicken pepper soup, cream of chicken, 3 meat stews, fried plantains, jollof rice, pilau, curried turkey etc. and a couple of Nigerian soups - ogbono and egusi and a third which may or may not have been an afang soup. There was also a full a la carte menu.

Armed security at both gates and a guard on each floor also. No nightfighters in the bar.

Staff were good - and I must admit to being surprised. My TV didn't work - I called down and asked for it to be fixed and went for a beer. Before the end of the first glass, reception came to me in the bar to let me know it had been fixed - and apologised for the inconvenience. Next day the safe died - and they were up in moments with release keys and fresh batteries. Apologies all round and not even a hint of putting the hand out looking for 'something for...' GM approached me personally later to apologise - two problems for a guest were too many for him. We had a chat about what I though and what he could do to make the place better - very receptive and entirely genuine.^

All in all, very happy - good price, good 4* hotel, good location, good security. New customer. ^^

I queried this by email to the Gold Crown CS dept. and after a wait of about a month, the replied that they had just manually credited the double points. :)

Thanks for the heads-up, superdawg. ^
