Miles & More (Lufthansa, Austrian, Swiss, and other partners) - 11k M&M expiring 9/31/2010

Hi,

In 2007, I accidentally credited 11,000 miles to Lufthansa. Those miles are expiring at the end of September. There's no chance I'll accumulate enough miles for an award, so I'm looking for suggestions:


Charitable Donation
A few magazine subscriptions
Trade them for something I could use on United(if that's permitted).


I don't know how to accomplish any of these tasks, so thanks for your advice and experience.

11 k isn't that much, especially if you lived in the U.S.

However, charitable donations start from 10,000. You can find the three alternatives here (http://www.miles-and-more.com/online/portal/mam/us/spend/miles_to_help?l=en&cid=1000390). They also offer shopping at skymall.com (http://www.skymall.com/worldshop), but in my experience most stuff there is useless.

Especially the route Germany - St. Petersburg or Athen is worth the 10k. ;) Or what about a weekend trip to Munich from LHR?

you could buy FAUCHON vouchers (7500=23€) and then use those once you are in Paris - or make a gift to someone who will travel in Paris.

Otherwise you could buy books in BOL.de or Buch.de.

You must be very lucky if your miles expire 9/31/2010 - then they will never expire as this date doesn't exist!

I am in a somewhat similar situation- I have ~3100 miles that will expire on 3/31/2011.

I could potentially goose the account with some SPG transfer mileage/Avis rentals between now on the end of March, but I'd be hard pressed to take it very far...and the taxes on LH awards don't make it much of a bargain.

Avis does have an award at 6500 miles (http://www.miles-and-more.avis.de/avisonline/de/avis_lufthansa.nsf/c/Welcome,Spend_Miles_-_NEW)- but it doesn't show what the rates are in advance of the reservation, so I'm reluctant to put miles in the account and come up short...

3100 miles are worth nearly nothing so I wouldn't bother...
