I wanted to get opinions about a posting that I am thinking of making, and the opinions of the elected TalkBoard members seems a good place to start. (Other FTers reading this forum, your opinions are also welcome.)
At a recent FT dinner with Captain Flanagan, well known to United Airlines FT members, he mentioned that a non-profit organization might be in need of travel-related donations, and I offered to look into it. (I leave out the name of that organization for the time being in case people feel that this solicitation is inappropriate for FlyerTalk.) The organization is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit specializing in taking in farm animals which have been seized by law enforcement, e.g., for cruelty of treatment, neglect, etc. Where possible, they rehab the animals and then look for placements with new owners who pledge to let the animals live out their lifespans in peace without being involved in agricultural production again. Otherwise, the animals live out their lives at this organization. This is an organization that Capt. Flanagan is not immensely involved with, in the sense that he doesn't serve on their board of directors or anything like that. However, his family have over the years adopted multiple animals from the organization.
The non-profit subsists on a lot of volunteer labor and is funded through individual donations (no gov't monies). It is holding a gala dinner fund-raiser in October to celebrate its 10th anniversary, with funds to be raised through dinner tickets, live auction, silent auction, and raffle. They have secured donations of four 1-day passes to DisneyWorld, and Universal Studios will match that donation if the organization can secure airfare/hotel accommodations to make a complete package for people to bid on. Obviously, a complete package will be more tempting for potential bidders.
That's where the potential generosity of FT'ers might come into play. Do people feel that a posting soliciting donations to this non-profit organization would be reasonable? If so, where? I was thinking of the United Airlines Mileage Plus forum just because that's the highest concentration of FT'ers would recognize Capt. Flanagan's name, but I'm open to suggestions of elsewhere.
