Starwood Preferred Guest - SPG Points for Room Upgrades (instant awards)

I am currently in an SPG hotel in Asia, and during check-in we were given a card at check-in that has a list of the number of points required to upgrade to each different category of room, including some of the extremely fancy suites, not just the basic junior ones.

I haven't seen this before in the USA and I was wondering if this is also available at other SPG hotels.

On the website, it said that upgrade availability is on a property by property basis, so I'm curious if it's common to be able to use SPG points to upgrade to all different types of suites (beyond just the basic), and, if you do upgrade, do you need to pay any add'l fees taxes for those nights?

Thanks in advance.

Using points to get an upgrade is part of the Instant Award Programme. You can alwyas check with the hotel to see what items are available for redemption which, of course, includes room upgrade.

As it is an award, it will not attract extra service charges. It is however better to double confirm with the hotel.
