Depends on how its booked...

I have had two situations before, (well more then two) where I've had overnights in SEA...

On an ANC-JNU-SEA-MIA I overnighted in SEA... and the agents would only check my bags to SEA (wrong IMO) - we left them at the claim (a bit risky) and were going to claim them in the morning, but they had been retagged thru to MIA. (It was a forced overnight there)

More recently I was on a KOA-OAK-SEA-LAX-DCA itin, and upon checkin in KOA, they checked my bags thru to DCA  so I didn't have to collect them in SEA... I asked if it was possible, the agent questioned it, but the tags printed out to DCA ^

Ultimately it depends if its a forced overnight or not (last flight in, first flight out) and if you need access to them in between flights.

When I flew to ANC last winter, I had to do a forced overnight in SEA [arrived at 930PM and my second leg was not until 6AM], but the agents in BUR tagged my bags all the way to ANC without any issues.

I guess it depends, but if you insist they will do it as long as all flights are on the same itinerary and it is not booked on a multi-city itinerary.

My second example was booked as a multi city :p and it still worked ;)

I'm going to guess that if it was an en-route overnight, and not a stopover that you will not be charged the fees even if you collect your bags and recheck the following day. IF you explain your situation at check in. The system will probably default to charge you, but it will likely be overridden if talk to an agent...again, this is just a guess. Perhaps a call to customer service or reservations is your best bet...they will probably KNOW the answer, and if not, find one for you.
