I heard Sochi will host the 2014 Winter Olympics and some of the venues will be held at Nalchik, 250 km away. Is there a public transit system that you can ride today?

You can take a direct train - it takes abou 16 hours. E.g. train #680 Adler-Vladikavkaz leaves Sochi at 5:48pm and arrives Nalchik at 10am next morning. The distance is a bit longer than you indicated - 650 km. There are only 2nd (kupe) and 3rd class (platzkart) tickets at ~$55 and $20 pp respectively. However this train does not operate every day.

I tried a couple of days for return. There is a train #697 Nalchik-Prochladnaya which leaves Nalchik at 2:40pm, arrives to Sochi at 6:06am next morning. It also doesnt' operate every day but both trains would be conducive to saving on a hotel costs.

Russian Railways - www.rzd.ru - used to have a handy English language portal where you can look up routes and tickets availability and even register and buy tickets online (pay by cc). It looks like after their recent website redesign, the English version isn't working properly. But you should be able to find a number of surrogates by travel agencies that will let you at least look up routes and timetables.

Ummm, a gew seconds of googling around would probably help to ascertain that yes, Sochi will host the Winter games and no, no competitions are going to be held in Nalchik whatsoever :)

Are you sure? City of Nalchik was preparing for the 2014 olympics with various building projects for several down slope venues.

Hmmm, care to share a link? (And are you sure you don't really mean Krasnaya Polyana?)

Are you sure you don't mean the Circassian Olympics which are being held there in 2012 ?

Nalchik is a sticky situation with it being so close to Grozny. I'd have a hard time believing the IOSC would be cool with this.
